From Lewis B. Avery, Clinton,
Michigan: I well remember the
tramps who used to walk the Chi
cago turnpike, now U. S. 112, in
the 1870’s, and how my grand
mother Avery cured a tramp of a
badly crippled leg. He stopped and
asked my mother for something to
eat, and-she told him that she was
not feeling well enough to wait on
him, but she would ask her mother
in-law to get him something. This
made grandmother angry and die
made it known in no uncertain
tones that she would not be
bothered with him. This apparent
ly made him as angry as die and
he straightened out his leg and
picked up his crutches, put them
under one arm and walked out of
the yard.
I also remember the “bunch”
matches are used about that time.
They consisted of cubes of wood
about two inches high, which had
been split part of the way through
to form 10 or 12 little slabs. The
split ends were covered with phos
phorus.'When one wanted a match
he had to pull off one of the little
dabs.

tacky: I remember the big wood
en trough about six feet long that
we used on washdays. About two.
feet of it was flat while the re
mainder held rinse water. Mother
would boll tile clothes in. a big
kettle and the children would then
beat them clean with a “battling”
stick. After that they were rinsed
in the trough and put out to dry.

duty with the 45th Infantry Di
vision.
Spicer, last stationed at Fort
Ord, Calif., entered the Army In
November 1952.
Infantry Division,
an Oklahoma National
It, has been In Korea
since December 1951. it has
participated In heavy combat
actions including the battles
for “T-Bone Hill” last summer.
The 26.6 million mine cows in
the U. S. last year produced an
average of 733 pounds (341
quarts) of milk per person.
