More Unemployment Is Shown In January In North Carolina January unemployment msur * ance payments amounted to $3, 159,000 during January, compared to a total of $2,415,000 In De cember, It Is revealed by Ool. Henry B. Kendell, Chairman of the Employment security Com mission. The benefits paid in the past five Januarys were as follows: $1,603,300 in 1950; $980,325 in 1951; $2,316,026 In 1952; $1,878, 230 in 1953 and $3,159,000 in 1954. Payments for the twelve months ending January 31, 1964, amounted to $22282,600 as compared with $19,765,850 for the similar peroid ending in January, 1953. The difference in the pay ments for thHnra periods Is ex plained by the. unemployment increase that occurred in .the November-January period with the payment total this year ex ceeding that for the same three , month period last year by more than $3,000,000. Benefit claims representing weeks of unemployment have re mained relatively constant In recent weeks and considerably below the peak level reached In the week ended January 9. The meeting was called to or der by the president and she led us in the 4-H Pledge and Motto after which the secretary gave her report. , The president asked if there was any business and Mr. Shack elford told to us again about planting cedar seedlings and the mailbox supports. The secretary gave'a report on the previous county council meeting.' We discussed the mat ter’ of our 4-Ht Clubs having a square dance at the fair this year/ : ; Since our song leader has quit school a new one was nom inated: She is Ann Arthur.
