Bright Y ellow Grades 0£ Tobacco In Demand “Concentrate onthe produc tion of superior-quality—bright jrollow grades—of flue-corad to bacco for 1954 to meet consum er preference for these types in the manufacture of cigarette*” This comes as timely advise from Tobacco ‘Associates, Inc., as growers begin preparations for their new crop of the “golden weed.” ‘*nxe buying pedicles of the manufacturing companies have been affected materially by the nicotine content of flue-cured tobacco during the past two years," the organization’s Jan uary-February Report declared, emphasizing “the situation Is such that tobacco growers should give careful attention to the selection of varieties and cultural practices that result in low nicotine content of the loaf.” va Talks with representatives or domestic manufacturers and the foreign trade by Tobacco Asso ciates officials reveal that they want tobaccos that $arry these properties: (1) 4^ nicotine content; 2) high sugar content; <31 light body; (4) bright col or; (5) porous and fluffy tex ture, and (6) a clean and mer chantable product. Experiment Station's recently released Re search Report dealing with this subject. The Research Report points out that "nicotine level 1s a quality index that Is care fuly watched In the plant breed ing program with resistant va rieties averaging about one half of one per cent less nico tine than do the older lines.” As demonstrated In controlled experiments, the report reveals that the level of nicotine ac cumulated In flue-cured tobacco Is influenced by these factors (1) Varieties are Inherently different in their nicotine con tents. Both the" level of alka loid syntests and the chemical nature of the alkaloid are gen etically controlled, with the newer disease-resistant varieties somewhat lower in ^nicotine than the older non~resisistant varieties tested. Varieties tain their relative rankings in nicotine despite differences in weather conditions and loca tions. (2) Nicotine accumulation is directly related to the level of nitrogen fertility; (3) the nico tine contents of flue-cured to bacco may vary in different cropping systems. Thus, when rotations are used for the con trol of nematodes, the observ ed differences may be due to differential root damage but, more probably, to the fertility residues from the previous crop; (4) nicotine is concen trated into the remaining tis sues after tobacco is topped and suckered. The degree of the ac cumulation <is directly related AN OPEN LETTER TO THOSE FOLKS WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT MONEY Dear “Money Worrier”: If you’re worried about , money, remember worry A alone won’t solve your fl- i naneial problems!
