This is Pat Sheppard, Miss Kinston ef 1954, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Sheppard. As “Miss Kinston” Pat will repre sent her heme town in the an nual beauty pageant sponsored by the North Carolina - Junior Chamber of Commerce in which Miss North Carolina of 1954 will be chosen. This pageant on July 14th in Burlington will have “Misses” representing' most of the larger cities and towns in the state and the winner in that contest frill then ro on to At lantic City, N. The Jones County Board ol Commissioners confirmed the decision of the voters in the county Monday (by naming Brawn Yates Sheriff of Jones County effective June 7th. On May 29th voters of the coun ty had given Yates a clear ma jority over six other candidates for the job. Yates has ben serving as sheriff since the death of Jet er Taylor earlier this spring. Coroner Wayne Janman had been serving in the capacity of “Acting Sheriff,” however, and Yates was still functioning as he had for over four years as Deputy Sheriff. With the-Monday action the board also deleted the $50 per month “retainer” that Jarman had been drawing as “Acting Sheriff.” The Jones Board also heard budget messages from Mrs. Zeta 9urt of the welfare department, Dr. R. J. Jones, health officer, and Auditor Earl Franck out lined the overall 1954-55 budg et, Donald Brock appeared to ask the board to take some action about the vdleran memorial board on the courthouse square. John Larkins appeared in bet half of Johnnie Gardner who was seeking a beer license for a Pollocksvllle establishment and two road petitions were ap proved and passed on to the highway department. MAYSVILLE MAN ON LEYTE John A.
