a. uve-murem report compliea
by Kinston Utilities Suprinten
dent Graham McAdams reveals
two things, one pleasant and
the other not so nice to recall
First, that the income of the
city-owned electricity and water
plants is running considerably
ahead of budgeted expectations
and, secondly, that Hurricane
Hazel’s cost to the utilities de
partment was $17,109.14, which
figure cannot, of course, contain
the revenues lost for that period
of from several hours to several
days when power was not flow
ing to many of the city’s custo
mers.
McAdams’ reports says that
his department put in 5,625 1-2
hours patching up the damage
done by Hazel at a labor cost of
$13,703.06, and materials used
amounted to $3,406.08. The lialbor
cost included a total of $3,592.32
paid out for ovetime work done
during and just after the worst
storm to hit Kinston in recorded
history.
On the happier side of the re
port income from water and
power sales during the first five
months of the current fisdcal
which was $66,108.35 more than
had been anticipated in the bud
get estimates of City Manager
Bill Heard and McAdams’ office
when the budget was prepared
last spring.
On tile outgo end of the past
five months of operations Mc
Adams’ report indicates that the
department spent $202,589.16,
purchased power from Carolina
Power & Light Co. to the tune
of $57,676 and made capital in
vestments amounting to $116,
322.92, which expenditures, of
course, include the cost of Ha
zel.
This total departmental ex
penditure was $376,568.09, which
is $8,299.46 MOKE than had been
planned for expenditure during
the five month period. The bud
get figure for the period was
$368,268.60.
On the net profit paid into
the city’s general fund side Mc
Adams’ report says, in part: In
come $653,941.70 minus opera
tional costs of $260,245.16, minus
capital outlay of $116,322.92 left
$277,373.62 for transfer to the
general fund.
The general fund during the
five-month period had antici
pated $227,564.75 from the utili
ties department which found
It, no doufbt with welcome arms,
receiving $49,808.87 more than
expected.
