[Jones County’s Voters Endorse
Pearsall Plan By 9 to 1 Majority

'voiced their approval ol the so
called PearsaH nan by neatly a
8 to 1 margin. There ware 1,730
votes for the changes in the con
Nstitution and the law recommended
by the advisory commission on
educatiohwhiie only 193 votes were

the other three changes in the
state constitution were also given
large votes of approval but none
by.the wtoe'ji|iMg0n heaped upon
the controversial school ~law
changes. The change permitting
higher pay for members of the
General Assembly passed by 1283
to 268, foe change in toe opening
of the General Assembly from Jan
uary to February was approved by
1393 to 191 and the change per
mitting i wile to exercise the
|ei#er of attorney in the absence
ot her husband was approved by
1367 to 188. ’

Pollocksville Arrests
Two of five Jones County arrests
in the past week came from a Fri
day night fracas in Pollocksville
in whidfi one man suffered a se
vere knife wound across'the wrist
and the other allegedly suffered
a few lumps and bruises from a
jackhandle in the hands of the
man who was eut. pf]

fering the cut who is accused of
wielding the jackhandle. Robert

Saturday 6020 of the 20,000
registered voters in Lenoir County
went to the polls and overwhelm
ingly stamped their approval upon
the so-called Pearsall Plan for
the public schools of North Caro
lina. The final tally was 5,302 In
favor and SU against the (dan.
Statewide the voting ran almost
4%-fo-l in lavor of the changes
in the Constitution and the laws
which'implemented the plan bear
ing the 'name of Tom Pearsall of
Rocky Mount, chairman of the ad
visory committee on education.
The heaviest vote against the
Pearsall Plan came In Kinston
Precincts No. 2 and NO. 4. Pre
cinot No. 2 has the county’s larg
est negro registration and pre
cinct No. 4 has no negro registra
tion.
Pink Hill Township Precinct No.
1 had the most overwhelming vote
in favor of the Pearsall Plan with
a 138 to 1 in support of the plan

transfer of a new agent, to serve
the Kinston area. Jack P. Thomas,
has been transferred from Raleigh
to Kington, replacing John Etir
wards who has been transferred
