SENATOR SAM ERVIN - #1 Pleof our country are focusing their Attention on the Administration to see what steps will be taken. CONGRESS As this is written, the general election results indicate that 49 Democrats and 47 Republicans were elected to the Senate on November 6. If that is the final figure, Demo1 crats will control the Senate by the same margin as in the last congress. Democrats won more easily in the House and have clinched con trol there. It means that Represen tatives Cooley, Barden, Durham, and Bonner will have highly im portant committee chairmanships, giving North Carolina important seniority. TOPSY - TURVY A number of things combined to produce an unusual situation with respect to the Presidency and Con gress. Democrats generally rad well at the local levels, and their strength was greatly increased in normally heavily Republican areas of the country; Republicans made inroads with Mr. ' Eisenhower in normally Democratic sections. It is indeed a topsy-turvy situation, and a situation in which there seems to be considerable consola tion for both parties in the pic ture as a whole. For example, the President ran well ahead of his party as an individual, and local Democrats captured A lot of of fices in Republican territory. UNITY The important thing now is to put the welfare of our country first. That is any purpose, and I am Con ■fident that my- Democratic col leagues will coperate with the; President when ttwtf feel that Ws program is beat, for the country. He had that cooperation from Democrats in the past Congress, and I see no reason for a change. AU of us realiae the gravity of -the world situation. The sudden -world crisis arose, at a time when It probably caused! a reat deal of peopte not to want to make a I aim deeply confidence the people of North Carolina again .placed in me. Thank you everyone. No political office can be taken for granted. I worked day and night to get around North Carolina. It was a physical strain, but rewarding in so many aspects that one in political life seldom thinks of the physical demands. That is perhaps one reason why so many public figures overtax their energies. Lu Jones Chosen For May Court At Meredith College Lu Jones of Pink Hill has been elected to the May Court at Mere dith College. She is one of two juniors chosen to represent Mere dith beauty at the May event. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Jones of Pink Hill, she is majoring in English at Meredith, The other junior chosen to be in the May Court is Betsy Lane of Asheboro; both girls were elected by members of their class.s Each class has. two representa tives in the Meredith May Court, with the May Queen and Maid of Honor being cbosen from the senior mm TICE OF SALE OF ESTATE FOR TAXES FOR YEA* 1955 owners thereof are as follows: WHITE OAK TOWNSHIP (WHITE) NAME DESCRIPTION TAXES J.
