A recent survey by the exten
sion department indicates there
are only 50 telephones in the ru
ral section of Jones County. Ac
cording to the 1954 farm census,
however, there were 63 fyrms then
with phones and a good Many have
been added since that time.

The weather apparently has
stepped up farming operation so
much in the past week in Jones
County that nobody had time to
sell, or buy any land. The only
title transfer recorded in the past
week was a “family affair” and
indicates the transfer of three
acres in Pollocksville Township
from John S. Noble to Fannie I
Noble.

The lowest salary being paid to
any . teacher in the system this
year is $200 per month for a nine
month period, hence ah annual
Salary of $1,800. This goes to a
teacher with an “Elementary A”
certificate which means that par
ticular teacher has had only one
year of college training.
Hie top salary paid for the nine
month category is $3,807. or $422
per month for each of the nine
months.
Vocational Agriculture'Teachers
who pay comes partly from federal
as well as state sources are paid
for 12 months in the year and the
top rate in Jones County in that
category presently is. $5,040 per
year, or $420 per month.

Water Resources Inventory
Meeting in Trenton Tuesday

W. H. Riley, executive secretary
of the state agency, said inven
tory committees iwill be formed
in all counties of the Second, Third
and Fifth Congressional Districts
within the next three weeks. The
program has already been initiated
in the First and Fourth Districts.
Three meetings have been sche
duled for the purpose of familiariz
ing county representatives with the
rede they are being asked to play
in the state-wide research pro
gram. These meetings will be held
at Trenton on April 23 and at
ReidswiMe on April 29.

the meeting in Trenton are Car
te^, Craven, Duplin, Jones, Ons- j

presents the Board’s third and
final major research activity in
connection with its current objec
tive — that of developing a plan
that will eliminate or minimise
the rapidly increasing number of
threats to the state’s water re
sources.
The Board has completed a
study aimed at detenminK how
much water is available in the
state and its program for deter
mining how that water is being
used is well advanced. The in
ventory now und&r way will reveal
the problems that have arisen or
may be expected to arise in con
nection with that use.
