The compromise resulted in a $2,000 award to Heath who suf fered painful but not critical in juries when-his ear struck the rear of the truck, which according to the complaint, made a sudden left turn without giving a signal just as Heath started to pass the truck. Timber Suit is Set First Case for Trial Judge Don Phillips, presiding uver Jones County Superior Oourt -decided this week that one' case had been waiting trial too long. He ordered*that the first jury trial in the next civil term of the court be that of J. T. Taylor, trad ing as the Taylor Lumber Com pany, against J. L- and OUvep The case involves some ages A "Jones County jury Monday awarded Benjamin Gaston Miller $300 damages for injuries he suf fered in an automobile accident with Raymond Mills. Hie accident took place on May 11, 1956 and Miller asked $5,000 damages but the jury apparently didn’t think he was hurt that bad ly Morgan Damage Suit' Vetoed by Jurors A Jones County jury Tuesday assigned contributory negligence as its reason for making no award to Stephen Morgan in 'an action against Leonard G. Adams. The suit arose from an automo bile accident and although the jury did not deny that Morgan had “suf fered damage it said that the dam age resulted from negligence on the part of Morgan as well as negli gence on the part of Adams, hence; ho award to Morgan. Robert Moore Two Annulment* and Three Divorces are Granted on Monday A major part of the abbreviated May term of Jones County Su perior Court was centered around two annulments and three divorces which were grantted in the day and a half session presided over by Judge Don Phillips of Rocking ham. ' ' One of the annulments was most unusual in that the Jones County couple for whom the decree was issued had been living together for 16 years. Eddie L. Murphy of Tuckahoe Township told the court his .wife suddenly confessed that she had never divorced a husband other annulment was more routine and it went to Thelma Grey Bell Coomibs from Linwood Frank lin Coombs. This was an easy is sue to decide since Coombs is currently serving a 5-to-7- year jail term upon conviction for big amy in the Onslow County Super ior Court. The divorces were all granted on grounds of two years separation and went to Cleve Henderson from Ella Hill Henderson, Sudie Louise Blumtoerg Hawes from William Walley Hawes and. to Irving G. Edwards from Rachel Ann Dowdy Ekjiwards. Equalization Day Because of expected complaints resulting from the revaluation which has recently been completed in Jones County a special session 6f the county commissioners, sit ting as a board of equalization and review, will be held at 10 a. m. j Monday for property owners in Beaver Creek and Chinquapin Townships. Other sessions will be held later as property owners in other townships are notified of their new valuations. Child Killed In Second Auto In *57 for Jones Bigftt year-old Mary Helen daughter; at Mra. James Canady of Dover route two, ran iata the path of a car near her * home-.at 7:30 Sunday evening and became the second highway fata lity of 1957 in Jones County. The little girl and several other* children were playing' beside the read when she dafted out — Chas ing an insect — directly intcj the path of a car driven by A. B. Wil liams of Goldsboro .route one. Patrolman L. S. Meiggs, who in vestigated, said there was no basis for an indictment against Wil- ' liams, since all witnesses agreed upon the manner in which the tragedy took place. Trenton Baptist to Have Picnic Sunday The annual picnic of Trenton Baptist Church win be held Sun day at The Cliffs of the Neuse state park near Seven Springs. Following the regular worship hour at 11 Sunday the congrega tion will pack up with picnic bas kets and head for that beautiful state park in Wayne County. Friendship Baptist Having Homecoming Sunday is to be Homecoming Day at Friendship Free Will Bap tist Church just east of '^renton. All past and present members of this well known Jones County con gregation are urged and invited to Came out and bring along the well-stocked picnic basket. 'Student Pastor for Maysville Methodist Church This Summer The pastor of Maysville Metho dist Church, the Rev. R. F. Moore, announced this week that a stu dent pastor) the Rev. Clark Reed, ha9 been appointed as student pas tot for ten weeks this summer, be ginning June lOthr Mr. Reed is a member of the Florida Conference, now pursuing his studies in Duke Divinity School. He will be aceompained by his wife, Patsy. Both Mr. and Mrs. Clark will help in the various activities of the church and church school for the summer months. Policeman’s Ball in Kinston on May 22nd All “Ducks are in a row” for the annual Policeman’s Ball which is to be given by the Kinston Po lice Department next Wednesday night, May 22nd, in the Central Warehouse in Kinston.
