Sunday evening at 7 o’clock the school presented their commencement program with each class participating. School Well Attended The Reverend Gerald Riggs an nounced that the First Baptist Bible School was a big success this year. The school was held Cram May 20-31. The tax rate lor ’57-58 has been set at *1.75 on (he *100 valuation, dropping from fast year's *3,40 on the *400 valuation. Another $5,000 Added Ag Building Fund for Present Renovations A bookkeeping transaction Mon day by the Jones County Board of Commissioners saw $5,000 added to the estimated 1956-57 revenues from the collection of back taxes. This same $5,000 was then trans ferred from the general fund to the fund originally set u|> to pay for additions and renovations made to the Ag Building. That fhnd was originally $10,000 but contract pricey for the work were in ex cess of that original $10,000 ap propriation. i ; ^ June Brings Boom in Marriage License The arrival of June brought a sudden boom in the business of issuing marriage license, Jones County Register of Deeds Mrs. D< W. Koonce reports. During the past week five cou ples received license to marry from her office. These included: Fred Jones Jr., 22, to Syfole Jean Conway, 19, both of Trenton route one. Jack Dempsey Metts, 22, of Comfort to Carol Deane Coombs, 18, of Kinston. ', Samuel H. Meadows, 21, to Sa die Louise Boomberg, 21, both of Maysville. - James Taylor, 20, of Trenton to Alvania Quineriy, 17, of Kinston. Pulp Company Buys Another Big Chunk Jones County Forest pUf, • Real estate transfer* recorded during the past week in the office of Register of Deeds Mrs. D. W Koonce reveal that another large chunk of . Jones. County woodland has passed into the hands of pulp wood companies. A. Griffip transferred 387 acres in cypress Greek Township to the Halifax Timber Company of Roa noke Rapids. Thiswas, by far, the biggest land transfer recorded dur ing the past week. Others included one acre 'from K. M. Murphy to J. C. Foy and Susie Hart in Pollocksville town ship. One acre from Hannah Killings worth to Robert B. KiOingsworth in Chinquapin township. Just under one acre (.96 acre> from John B. Dixon to Lizzie M. _Dixon in Pollocksville township. One tract from Rhoden Gooding to Raeford Blizzard in Tuchahoe township. Board Tells Sheriff To Collect Over-due Beer License Taxes Sheriff Brown Yates Monday was told by the board oi county com missioners to have beer dealers in the county pay up or shut up. On the heels of numerous com plaints over delinquencies in that department the board issued the order to Sheriff Yates to crack down. Faison Nobles Named Nobles succeeds the late C. M. Griffin, who died this spring, and who held that post for many years. Fugitive Captured by FBI in Richmond, Va. Robert Earl Marshall, former Kinstonian, who has been sought by local police for nearly two years, was arrested this week in Rich mond, Va. by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Detectives Wheeler Kennedy and Leslie Gay returned Marshal] from Richmond Tuesday. The fugitive faces two charges of assault with a deadly weapon that grew out of shooting incidents on August 17, 1955. Tommy Dail, at that time an insurance agent, was shot in the hip by Marshall, and Isaiah White fortunately was not hit when Mar shall' shortly after the first shoot ing incident took a shot at him.
