150,000th Telephone on Wednesday
A significant milestone btVtfie
progress of Carolina Telephone and
Telegraph Company was passed
September 4th as the 150,000th
telephone of the firm wqs installed.
Only five years ago, the rapidly
expanding company celebrated in
stallation of its lOO.OOQth telephone
and two. years ago installed its
125,000th' telephone. "
Fittingly, the historic telephone
went Into the home of Mr. and Mrs.
J. C/West, Jr., who live some
two miles northeast of Trenton in a
rural area. For it is in such rural
homes as this that the company
has beep concentrating its efforts
in recent years to provide telephone
service; The handsome new green
telephone installed in the West
home mariced completion of ah
$8,900 rural project in Jones Coun
ty to provide telephone service to
some 18 rural applicants in that
area. ' • ,x
Attending brief ceremonies at
the Wjest home to mark the occa
sion, in addition to Mr. and Mrs.
West, were former State Senator
John Larkin of Trenton, State Re
presentative John Hargett of Jones
County, R S. Oliver, local tele
phone manager, and W. E. Mar
shall, district commercial mana
ger of the telephone company’s New
Bern district.
Despite the phenomenal increase
in telephones ra|jjte by the tele
(a‘ 50 per cent increase)7 its ' in
vestmentha* increased front
$36,600,000 in 1952 to $75,100,000 4s
of July 31 which is a $130 per cent
increase. Inflation and the result
ing increased cost of doing busi
ness is the guilty1 party. It jtist cost
more today, and considerably more
at that, to provide additional tele
phone service. ,
Complimentary words were made
by those 'attending the Carolina
Company’s 150,000th telephone cere
mony. The company’s rural pro
gram this year has resulted in the
gain of nearly 4,000 rural telephones
in pastern Carolina. During 1956,
the cqmpany gained oyer 12,000
telephones. Of this all time high
record, nearly one-half are rural
leaving behind truck, 2500 pounds
Of sugar, 800 pounds of meal and
660 empty fruit jars; which were
net believed intended for preserv
ing peaches. The truck was regis
tered in the name of Guy Lee Rid
dick of La Grange route-two, who
has riot yet come forth to claim
telephones. '
Mr. and Mrs. West thanked the
telephone company representatives
for the privilege of having the
company’s 150,000th telephone in
stalled in their home and were most
enthusiastic about the benefits they
will teap from having a teleohone.
Over 100 rural projects, many
larger than this one, have b?en or
are scheduled for completion by the
company during 1957.
