'boy* began to Hodges’ next Kerr, Scott term expires in Hodges ends his job was thought to be tiie target of the ambi e’s gift to Tar another exhilirating ex perience intervened in the summer of 1956 at the National Democratic Convention. There, Hodges quickly grasped the significance of what has to be done to move from the ^tate to the national political arena. He saw great men of the caliber Of Senator Richard Russell shunted to one side by hungry power' seek ers of the Kefauver variety. This paradox was made possible or forded by one man, Russell, stand ing with his native Georgia on "tiie question of state rights and federal interference into purely stateaffairs, while Kefauver with the flexible morality of the power seeker “raised himself above sec tional matters” and swallowed Rude, stock and barren the poli tical pimpery of the National Democratic Party and the Nation al Association for the Advance ment of Colored People. Tbi§ lesson was not lost on Lu ther. Now that he had all he want ed from the people of North Caro lina tte abdicated his former strong attitude against the federal court interference in our school! and began referring, prayerfully to “voluntary segregation” and this month reached the pinnacle of his abdication by sounding off in full Haxriman or Kefauver fashion, “We wifl not tolerate violence Carolina”. To. which the -rightfully fire asking, "who * the violence. North Caro orinter Kefauver is not totally eliminat ed; from national political promin ent; no man of such consuming ambition and over-powering ego ewer is until he goes to his “just reward^’. But he has twice struck out on the national level, and poli ticians like the fresh scent of suc cess when they start looking for some “Christian” to toss in the na tional arena. Hodges has that odor, if no other. In business and in politics he is batting 1000, which is better than par for the course. Hodges is rational enough to ac cept the unlikelihood of ever grab bing the presidential nomination since geographically if in no other way he is a Southerner. But a fate so kind as that of Hodges might even promote his address'to 1600 (Pennsylvania Avenue, which is the White House in case you are not too familiar with District of Colum bia house n,umbers. , To Die 1960 national convention Hodges can come with the first southern state to “voluntarily mix negroes and whites in its. public schools’Y this would make him ac ceptable jf not palatable to the Walter Reuthers and Carmine Di Sapios who rule the Democratic Partyroost' at present. His business would be sufficient tp him the necessary “conserva suppont, his eternal “Rotary ’ handshaking would do the reht. - If you think this is so far-fetched don’t know "Luther Like.
