August 3 Set lor "DDD” Day
By Carolina Tel. and Tel.
August 3 18 to be "ODD DAY”
in Kinston, Grifton, La Grange,
Moss Hill and Pink Hill—Direct
Distance Dialing Day, that is.
Tins date has been selected for
inauguration of an exciting news
service which will enable tele
phone subscribers in these five
exchanges to dial many of their
own station-to-srtation long dis
tance telephone calls without plac
ing their call with an operator.
The announcement was made by
W. E. Thornton, local manager for
Carolina Telephone and Telegraph
Company. ■ i„
Beginning August 3 telephone
users in these exchanges will be
able to dial calls to about 120
places in North Carolina and to
hundreds of other places across
the nation.
Later, as telephone exchanges
'in other places are equipped to
receive Direct Distance Dialed
calls, subscribers will be notified
of these additional places they can
dial.
Prior to “DDD Day” a special
Direct Distance Dialing directory
will be furnished to subscribers in
these towns. This directory will
contain instructions for using DDD,
a partial list of places that may be
dialed and codes for dialing them.
A special instruction folder will
be issued to subscribers at an early
date.
As a forerunner to the coming
of DDD all telephone numbers in
Kinston, Grifton, La Grange and
pink Hill will be converted to a
new nationwide “two-five” num
bering plan (two letters and five
numerals) on June 28. (iMoss Hill
numbers have already been con
verted to this numbering system.)
This will enable electronic equip
ment to deceive incoming long
distance calls which have been
dialed direct by distant operators
or subscribers.
These changes are being made
to provide faster and more effi
cient telephone service in this area,
