Tins date has been selected for inauguration of an exciting news service which will enable tele phone subscribers in these five exchanges to dial many of their own station-to-srtation long dis tance telephone calls without plac ing their call with an operator. The announcement was made by W. E. Thornton, local manager for Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company. ■ i„ Beginning August 3 telephone users in these exchanges will be able to dial calls to about 120 places in North Carolina and to hundreds of other places across the nation. Later, as telephone exchanges 'in other places are equipped to receive Direct Distance Dialed calls, subscribers will be notified of these additional places they can dial. Prior to “DDD Day” a special Direct Distance Dialing directory will be furnished to subscribers in these towns. This directory will contain instructions for using DDD, a partial list of places that may be dialed and codes for dialing them. A special instruction folder will be issued to subscribers at an early date. As a forerunner to the coming of DDD all telephone numbers in Kinston, Grifton, La Grange and pink Hill will be converted to a new nationwide “two-five” num bering plan (two letters and five numerals) on June 28. (iMoss Hill numbers have already been con verted to this numbering system.) This will enable electronic equip ment to deceive incoming long distance calls which have been dialed direct by distant operators or subscribers. These changes are being made to provide faster and more effi cient telephone service in this area, ■ HOOKER & CO. Snow Hill Man is New Sports Head At Mt. Olive College 1316 appointment of Hebert W. (Bob) Moye of Snow Hill as head of the department of physical edu cation at (Mount Olive Junior Col lege has been announced by presi dent W. Burket(e Raper. Moye, a former basketball play er and graduate of Bast Carolina College, is the son of the Reverend and Mrs. J. C. Moye of Snow Hill and benefactor of the Mount Olive Junior College library. He toas just completed service as a lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force. Mrs. Moye is the former Betty iWhitfield of Roocboro and is also a graduate of Bast Carolina College. ■The Moyes have one childv a daughter, Deborah Sue, age 2. ■ In announcing the appointment of Moye, president Raper declared, “1 believe that we have found the -right young man who can develop and grow with a sound program of physical education and athletics at (Mount Olive Junior College .Under his leadership I am confident that our sports program will grow as the college grows.” : ». ---- State Launches New 4-H Swine Program A new 4-H awards program open to boys and girls interested in raising meat animals has been ar ranged by the National Commit tee on Boys and Girls QUb Work. It is the national 4-H Swine pro gram, and is supported by the Moorman Company of Quincy, Illi nois. The company will provide $400 collage scholarships to six national 4-H champions as well as state trips to the 4-H Club Congress in Chicago, and medals will be a warded to county winners. “It gives us a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction to be come the donor in connection with the national 4-H Swine awards program,” stated E.
