R. Smith, J. P. Gardner, R. L. Mattocks, Thomas Conway and G. S. Pelletier present. G. Garland Smith Mills and Thomas a Thieves Fail in Try At Jones ABC Store The young Jones County ABC store system won its -first round with thieves Monday night when a steel door at the rear of the new Wyse Forks store proved too tough to crack. Sheriff Brown Yates .says a de termined effort had been made to rip the door far enough away to permit the thieves to get inside where the “real stuff” was stack ed. Yates guesses that the thieves must have been frightened off be cause they were very- nearly “itf ’ when they decided to leave. The doorway- was badly damaged by some type of very stout lever that had 'been pulled by a vehicle. Maysville ^Clubwomen Some New Buies The Maysville Home Demon stration Club bad a called meet ing Monday afternoon at the Com munity Building. There were nine members present. The club voted to take on Hid time. Yates says fee almost enjoy the July heat hut for one law‘en forcement problem that plagues him, as ft does ajl other North Carolina officers; Tbat^is the lax I^licy practiced by most mer chants in accepting checks. «. Yates sftys too, many merchan's haive just decided to take a check (for any amount from anybody that happens along, and then they scream for the sheriff’s depart ment to collect their money when the check bounces, as many do. Firstly, Sheriff Yates reminds, j ‘'It is a violation of the law for j any merchant to accept ANY check, knoiwimg that the maker of that cheek does not have funds to cover the check.” i Never in the memory ot local officials has an indictment been ; issued under this law, but it is still very much the law, and merchants I who take “slow checks” to hold i against an .account for some in- I dividual that they do not trust ought to keep this in mind. ! t XUlCi UXd>i> VI ClltTUK ttilUIig IS perhaps, the worst abuse of law en forcement agencies by the gen eral public. Such merchants who accept checks of this type are not interested in sending the check maker to jail all they want is “my j money”. Other check problems consist of1 merchants simply taking checks, from people they do not know in j the some time sad hope that the j Check will be “all right”. Yates says he does not mind, in the slightest doing his best to ap prehend and prosecute any bona fide “check flasher” but he says be is getting—-)n fact has been a collecting agency for mer chants who d,o not make any effort to protect themselves.
