A Summary of the Employment Situation in North Carolina
AGRICULTURAL
Kinstoo-L»noir-Trenton Area:
Cotton yield is good, all avail
able labor, is being used picking.
Sweet potato harvest is slowly
getting underway and some corn
is being harvested with mechanical
pickers.
New Bern Area
Sweet potatoes are 40 per cent
dug with prices showing fair to
good. Local and on-farm labor
sufficient for harvest. Light cot
ton harvest has begun as good wea

STATE SUMMARY
Good weather has prevailed gen
erally. Asheville area’s bean crop
will be completely harvested by
October 1. Camden will need labor
for bean crop in October while;
Currituck County will use 650 mi
grant workers. Beans will mature
about one week late in, Edenton
area. Sweet potatoes are showing
'good yield. 'A Bayboro crew is in
Carteret-Onsflow ar^sa. Currituck
quality, quantity and prices are
good as they are in Mt. Olive. Har
vest has just begun in Washing
ton section while it is 40 per cent
complete in New Bern area. Cot
ton is being picked all over. While
first pickings are being completed
at Fayetteville, other sections re
port peak aotivity. Peanuts will
begin being dug in Edenton area
Sept. 29 and inab out two weeks
in Greenville, corn yields are good
with mechanical pickers being
used around Greenville,’ harvest
wages are $11 an acre or 50c
hour. Tobacco is moving to mar
ket with Greenville reporting 40
percent graded. Wlages generally
are: Cotton picking $4 ewt; grad
ing .tobacco $4 cwt.; harvesting
corn 25e-30c bushel; sweet pota
toes 12c-23c. Hendersonville re
ports prices for vegetables as:
Pole beans $2.20-$6.30; cabbage
$1.35 50 lb. sack; peppers $2-$3;
apples $3.50-$4. Hendersonville re
ports, that 247 children of migrant
families are attending the special
school set up for them.
