From WASHINGTON
KALE®® — As I travel over
North Carolina during the Con
gressionl recess, I am becoming
more and more impressed with the
tremendous amount of interest that
citizens of all walks of life have
in the development of our water
resources.
No longer can it be said that the
people of North Carolina are tak
ing water for granted.
During the past week I made a
rather extensive trip through
Wilkes County and the surround
ing areas, and everywhere I went
people asked me aibout the Wilkes
boro Reservoir flood control pro
ject. This project, which should
reach the construction stage next
flood control dam a ferw miles
year, involves the building of a
north of Wilkesboro on the Yadkin
River.
It is badly needed primarily as
a flood control measure, but the
good ef.ects that will come from
it will have a major influence on
the development of the entire Up
per Yadkin R ver Valley. It will
mean new sources of water for
agricultural, municipal, and in
du:<Tial purposes all along the
River including Elkin, Winston
Salem, Greensboro and many
other cities, towns, and com
munities.
It will cost about ten million
dollars to build the Wiikeslboro
project, but when the future de
velopment of the river basin is
considered, th's is a cheap price
for an investment that will bring

Bankers See Way
To Boost Farm Income
By $17 Million
North Carolina’s bankers are
promoting a program which they
believe can increase the annual
income of Tar Heel farmers by at
least $37 million.
The agriculture committee of the
North Carolina Bankers Associa
tion is urging all bankers to “sup
port and promote vigorously” the
construction of grain-storage fa
cilities throughout the State. The
bankers say that more facilities,
whether they be commercial or on
farm type bins, will directly af
fect farm income in the Seate.
L. V. Lowe of Chadlbourn, chair
man of the Association, says that
35 million bushels of grain are im
ported each year for use in North
Carolina. Far m’ore than that is ex
ported each year, Lowe says.
“Farmers could get about 50
cents more per bushel for their
grain, on the average, if they could
hold it in the State until it is
needed,” Lowe says. “In effect,
all we’re doing is shipping it out
of the State for storage, and then
bringing it back. And our farmers
lose about 50 cents per bushel on
the deal,” he says.
untold benefits to many thousands
of people.
N. C. Dairymen Get $4
Million from Sale of
School Lunch Milk
The special milk program, au
thorized by Congress in 1954,
meant $4 million for Tar Heel
dairymen during the 1957-58 school
year.
The dairymen furnished schools
with 7.5 million gallons of milk.
This was 120 million, half-pint
containers.
R. B. Redfern, dairy specialist
for the N. C- Agricultural Exten
sion Service, calls this North Caro
lina . participation in the School
Lunch P/ogram a “splendid job
of cooperation for all concerned
with the welfare of the state.”
“The dairy producers did an
outstanding job getting the milk
produced at the proper time,”
Redfern said; “and the dairy pro
cessors made sure the milk was
available at air schools.”
