improvements planned for US 17
in Eastern North Carolina will be
the subject at a public .hearing in
Trenton on Friday.
Highway officials will.be in the
Jones County Courthouse in Tree
ton Friday morning at 11:00 to
explain a proposal to .rebuild the
Trent River Bridge at Pollocks
ville. Officials and citizens of the
area are invited to attend.
Under the proposal, a fixed span
bridge and approaches would be |
constructed with provisions for
four lanes of traffic, a 56-loot
clear roadway and a 4*foot raised
median strip to separate jepposing
lanes of traffic. The present two
lane bridge was lafoeledJnadequate
and the seven-member State High
way Commission approved a re
placement structure at.a Raleigh
lheeting last October.

way Commission, to explain the
proposed improvement.

Commission in October include:

Judge Mintz Trying
Clear Many Old Cases
From Jones Calendar
Judge Rudolph Mintz of Wil
mington, currently the presiding
judge of Jones County Superior
Court, is going to make a strong
effort at the May 11th term of that
court to clear its civil calendar of
old, inactive suits.
All lawyers and litigants still
living and involved in these eases
.-are being informed of this effort
and will be given opportunity to
show why such ancient and in
active cases should not be non
suited.
Clerk Murray Whitaker says the
'.civil calendar includes some 70
odd cases, same going as far as
15 years back since they were

Jones ABC Stores
Gross $19,176.30
During Past Month
Jones Oouty’s three ABC stores
grossed $39,176.30 during the month
of March, Supervisor Ray Harri
son reported this week.
Store No. 2 at Hargett Cross
roads again led the sales with a
gross of $7,210.90. Store No. 1 in
Trenton was next with gross sales
of $6,169 and Store No. 3 at Wyse
Forks reported sales of $5,796.40.
The March sales bring the total
for this fiscal year (since July 1)
up to $390,904.75; which is an aver
of $23,211.64 per month.
The last operating report of the
| ABC system showed a net income
of 10.76 per cent, which if con
tinued through the fiscal . year
would indicate a profit at this time
for this fiscal period of just over
$20,541.

'County Board of Commissioners
Monday adopted a reso.uton ask
ing Representative John Hargett
to secure legislation permitting
pay increases for Jones County
jurors and members of official
hoards.
For ' a number of years the
commissioners have been urged
to ask for an increase in the $5
per day they receive themselves
but until Monday they resisted
these urgings. The resolution asks
Hargett fbr a local bill that would
raise pay for commissioners,
health board, school board, wel
fare board. and jurors to $10 per
day plus 10 cents per mile travel
allocation.
County commissioners in Lenoir
County are paid $50 per month,
plus 10 cents per mile, plus $25
fbr sitting once a year as a board
of equalization and review and
the chairman of the board gets
an annual allocation of $200 in
addition to this $625.
In Duplin County each commis
sioner is paid $1020 per year.
In Craven County the chairman
is paid $1200, members $480 per
year plus mileage.
Onslow pays its chairman $15
per day and members $10 per day.

Hinges Upon Actions
Of General Assembly
Whether or not the present ses
sion of the General Assembly al
locates sufficient money to match
state and federal funds will de
termine if Jones County gets a
Health Department building in
the coming year.
Hie Jones County Board of Com
missioners was so advised by state
officials this week, who acknowl
i edged the Jones County applica
tion for a $30,000 building of some
1,750 square feet.
A site for the health center has
been offered free to the county by
Mrs.. Vender Pollock and Surveyor
lE. C. Armstrong was paid $30 this
month by the county for mapping
this site.
Roger Allen Smith
Freed Manslaughter
In Wayne County
Monday a motion for a directed
not guilty verdict of manslaughter
against Roger Allen Smith of
Trenton was allowed in Wayne
County Superior. Court.
Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dew
ey Smith, was indicated after a
wreck last year in which a Wayne
Countian was killed. After the
directed verdict in the more seri
ous charge Smith through his coun
sel, Larkins & Brock, pled guilty
to failure to yield the right of way
and was fined $25 and the court
costs.
