C, THURSDAY, MAY 7, 1959 VOLUME X Havelock Woman Killed Saturday in Kinston Wreck Mrs. Beverly Hawkins, wife of Master Sergeant Vernon Hawkins of Havelock, was instantly killed at 10:15 last Saturday morning in a head-on crash eight miles west of Kinston on the. " Jack Bunn, Duke University stu dent from Bethesda, Md., driver of the other car in the fatal crash, suffered a broken pelvis, severe cuts about the lace and a dislocat ed hip. An exchange student from Turkey, a co-ed at Duke riding with Bunn, suffered a broken bone in one foot and severe shock. Five girls, including two of Mrs. Hawkins’ daughters, who were be ing taken to a Scout meeting in \Goldsboro, were hospitalized from the Crash. Linah Young, Patricia Ann Doug las and Caroline Coker were dis charged Sunday after emergency treatment and examination. Mrs. Hawkins’ daughters, Janice, 15, and Leslie, 9, remain in the hospital from more serious injuries but this week they are reportedly “out of danger” and doing fair. Investigating Patrolman Wesley Parrish says eye-witnesses reveal that Bunn’s car swerved slowly over to the wrong lane of traffic for no apparent reason and that both cars crashed at about 55 miles per hour. Bunn will be charged with manslaughter. X Maysville Mayday Program on Friday Die Maysville Elementary School held its annual May Day festival Friday morning in the school audi torium. Miss Shirley Baribee, eighth grader, reigned oarer the festival as Queen, her attendants were Misses Doris Toler, Barbara Hay, 'Patsy Janman, Brenda Collins, Anne Smith and Corinne Foy. The queen was crowned by Prin cipal Clifton Philyaw after which the program “Colonization of A merica” was presented for the queen and her court. The returns revealed that the following were elected to the Board of Aldermen, the names ap pealing in the order in which they were elected: Robert L. Mattocks, Jere W. Pelletier, W. W. Brafford, Harry Bryant and Fannie Foscue. W. W. Brafford and Fannie Fos cue were the only incumbent mem bers of the previous Board. Chief Bass and Chiaf Smith demonstrated their service in in structing the fireman of Trenton the moons of drafting watar. Honors Awarded to Members Of Jones Girls’ Basketball Team The Jobes Central basketball seasOn ended with honors given out Wednesday, -April 28. Varsity letters were given to: Carolyn (Casey) Price, Lillie Faye Banks, Noia Bonner, Wanda Bal lard, and Dorothy Webb. Stars denoting second or third year of play, were given to Peggy Craft, Und» UiUs, Betty Jooee, Jo Ann Craft, Maxine Spence, Glenda Barker, Lois Eng, Geraldine West to Betty Jones. These girls’ names will be engraved on a plaque pre sented to the school by Mr. J. D. Jenkins, this plaque is to hang in the trophy case at Jones Central. Betty Jones also won the “Free Throw Championship” trophy. Jones Central had a very suc cessful basketball season. The girls racked up twenty wins to only one loss. Tfie Jones county Boara ot com missioners Monday unanimously voted to ask Representative John Hargett to introduce the necessary legislation to place all Jones Coun ty elections under the provisions of General Statute 163-175 which applies to the casting and counting Under this law all persons are required to vote for the number of offices tar be filled in each cate gory. The law is aimed at the elim ination of single-shot voting, which permits a person, feu- instance, in voting for the members of the board of comimissianers to vote for one rather than for five. Last year in the senatorial vot ing several counties in the 7th Dis trict, which includes Greene, Le noir, craven, Carteret, Onslow and 1 Jones, were under the provisions of this law, while others were not. Those under the law were forced to vote for two senators—which are allocated to the district—but other counties—notably Carteret— single-shotted their candidate to the deteriment of candidates from other areas. Resolutions were also passed asking Hargett to introduce en abling legislation that would raise the pay of members of the board of commissioners, welfare and education, to $ao pec day plus mileage and raise pay of jurors from the present $5 per day and one roundtrip mileage to and from court to their home to the actual mileage they travel during a week of court. The three boards now draw $5 per day and mileage at seven cents per mile. Beer License OK’d A beer license for the estab lishment of Robert Howard on US 17 between Msysville and Potlocks ville was approved by the Jones County Board 'of Cbmanissioners Monday. Earlier the board had ve toed a license for Howard because of his establishment’s nearness to a church. But when the hoard learned that Howard had applied for an off-premises, license, ra ther than an qp-preanise license they decided to approve the ap plication. Maysville School Installs PTA Leaders The Maysville Elementary School Parent Teachers Association met at the school Monday night for the installation of the new officers. The meeting was opened with Mrs. W. F. F. little giving the devotional using the 19th Psalm. Mrs. C. D. Smith, outgoing presi dent, presided over the meeting and installed the neiw officers as follows; President Mrs. Robert Buck, Vice-President Mrs. Sain Pruitt, Secretary Mrs. Albert Bracey, Treasurer Mrs. Bill Hen derson. Mrs. Jaimes Baibee presented a record of the “Star Spangle Ban ner” to the school. The record had been given hy Mrs. Ram Mal lard on behalf of the Farm Bureau Association. Refreshments of orange punch and cake with banana cream fill ing was served by Mrs. Henry Mills, Mrs. William Smith and Mrs. Ball Henderson. Trenton Town Meeting Re-elects Mayor and Present Aldermen The biennial Trenton Townmeet inig was held Tuesday night in the court house with about SO quali fied .persons attending and after a brief discussion the incumbent mayor and aldermen were elected for another two-year term. Mayor M. E. Hines and Alder men Donald Brock, George N. Noble and Dart Lee Noble will be sworn in at the June meeting.
