'The long-legged thief then added injury by taking Wilson’s pickup track to make bis geitaway. The truck was found Tuesday morning about five miles north east of Kinston in a wooded area along Jericho Branch. Very little of the estimated $1,000 haul from the Pink Hill establish ment has been recovered. Items stolen includes several record jflayers, several radios, a dozen wrist watches, some alarm dodcs, one vacuum cleaner, one tire, about 20 cartons of cigarettes, $5 in cash and 10 pounds of Frosty Morn meats. Gray were renamed tax appraisers for Jones County by the board of coun ty commissioners Monday morn ing. They have held this job for the past several years, which consists of assessing the value of new homes and other buildings as they are added! to the tax list each year. Dr. Koonce Delegate To National Cancer Society in New York Prominent North Carolina Sur geon, Dr. Donald B. Koonce of Wilmington, has been elected as the North Carolina professional delegate to the National American Carncer Society in New York for a Last Year Carolina’s 2nd Worst on Roads x lie j cat apeuw u ageuj for at least 1183 persons and sad nes for many thousands of others, the Motor Vehicles Department said this week. The tentative death toll of 1183 highway fatalities was the “second worst in North Carolina motor his tory.” Officials closed their hooks on the grim total at midnight, Decem ber 31. Persons injured and who later die plus delayed death reports will boost the final reckoning somewhat. Not since 1941 when 1289 died has the Tar Heel motor toll been greater. Reviewing the past decade road fatalities year by year totaled: 989 in 1960, 1071 in ’51, 1115 in >52,1118 in ’53, 991 in ’54, US in >55, Uf« in >56, 1063 in ’57, 1081 in *58 and a tentative 1183 last year. This was announced Fields, CT&T manager in runsiou, who stated that the project will in volve an estimated expenditure of $26,650. This project will involve plac ing 16.2 miles of buried cable and constructing 5.5 miles of neiw pole such rural CEMETERY FENCING Monday night, after some dis cussion the Kinston Board of Al dermen voted to accept the 2nd lowest bid offered for fencing e round Maplewood Cemetery. The discussion came from the fact that Farm Service Company of Kinston was ©nly $9 higher than the low bidder from Factolus in Pitt Coun ty. The local firm’s price was $1,097. This will complete the fenc ing of the cemetery. at a site near New Bern on a mil lion-dollar pre-stressed concrete truss plant. Jones ABC Stores Gross • $152,361.30 During 1st Six Months Period Transfer Business With Explanation 8, .. ,, Monday the Jones County Board of Commissioners agreed to trans fer its purchases of bottled gas from Eastern Butane Company of New Bern to Jerikins Gas Com pany of Pollociksville, but the board instructed its clerk to write the New Bern firm and give th'e reason for the change. The service of the New Bern firm was completely satisfactory but the Jenkins firm is the only bottled gas dealer in Jones County and it was felt proper to do busi ness with “home folks”, who pay taxes in the county. Board Vetoes Beer License on Monday Monday the Jones Counity Board of Commissioners unanimously re jected an application for beer license filed by Hazel Stanley Wadsworth of Pollocksiville Town ship. ‘ NO reason was given for the re jection of the license for the fill ing station which is located] at the intersection of US 17 and NC 58 just south of Pollocksville. two-year term, beginning January 1, 1860. Vernelson Resigns Effective Feb. 1st Assistant Jones County Farm Agent Dan Vernelson Monday ten dered his resignation to the board of county commissioners effective February 1st. Accumulative leave credited to Vernelson will continue his pay period until February 15th. The Craven Countian is moving to Florida to accept work there. Total sales in Jones County’s three AiBC whisky stores reached $152,361.30 for the first six months of the 1969-60 fiscal period, ac cording to sales figures, released this week by Supervisor Ray Har rison. In the first three months (July August-’Septemiber) gross sales were $74,463.70, and for the past hree months (October-November Decemtoer) sales amounted to $77,897.60. Stare No. 1 at Trenton had total sales for this final three-month period of $25,414; which includes sales of $9,280.35 in October, $7, 227.45 in November and $8,906.20 in December. Store No. 2 at Hargett Crossroad led in sales for the period with total sales of $28,204.25, which in cluded $8,749.05 in October, $8,071. 15 in November and $11,384.05 for December. Store No. 3 at Wyse Fork grossed $24,289.35 for the period which broke down: $8,782.15 in October, $7,000.50 in November and $8,496. 70 for December. The profit-and-loss statement for the first three-month period show ed a net profit of $8,080.12, or 10.85 per cent. This same rate of profit applied to the three-month period just end ed would indicate an additional profit of $8,451.90, or a total profit of $16,532.02 for the first six months of the current fiscal period. DON'T LIKE CHOW Russell Jackson of New Bern begged Recorder Eramett Wooten to susipend a 30-day jail term for pub'ic drunkenness this week, de claring that he had an aggravated set of ulcers that did not respond happily to prison food. “I know”, Jackson told the judge, “I’ve tried it before.’’ Dr. Jenkins Named New ECC President Tuesday Dr. Leo Jenkins was named President of East Caro lina College at a special meeting cf the college trustees. Jenkins succeeds Dr. J. D. Mes sick, who resigned last year to take a job with the federal government. Jenkins has been vice president of the college and dean of students for many years and soon after Messick’s resignation a large part of the faculty and student body at ECC endorsed his promotion to the school. Kinston Athlete Held For College Robbery David Adkins of Kinston route two is charged with breaking, en tering and larceny by Winston Salem police in connection with the robbeny on December 17th of the Wake Forest College book store. Adkins, a star athlete at Grain get High School, was a junior at Wake Forest, where he was a warded an athletic scholarship. He wias arrested on his return to college after the Christmas holi days, and admitted his guilt to po lice there. None of the $600 in cash and very little of the stolen mer chandise has been recovered. Paul Harvey to Speak In Kinston on 18th Paul Harvay, internationally known radio icommantator, will be the featured speaker January 18th at the annual Distinguished Ser vice Award banquet of the Kinston Junior Chamber of Commerce.
