MONEY ALLOWANCES FOR
CHILDREN—To parents: Here are
same hints that are good. Your
long-range goal could be to guide
the child from complete depend-*
enee of early childhood to a state
of mature independence.
You’ll find that the best teacher
is experience. And one of the most
practical devices for providing ex
perience is an allowance. The way
your children handle money will
shape values and attitudes that
will stay with them all their lives.
Think of a child’s allowance not
as a handout, but as a share of
family money normally spent' on
Ms personal .needs and pleasures
that you give to him to manage.
The right handling of money can
teach:
1. Saving, because eventually he
will want something that a single
period’s allowance won’t cover.
2. Relative values, because he
will have to choose between sev
eral possible purchases by decid
ing which is really worth more to
him
3. Planning, because he benefits
by making his limited amount go
as far as possible.
Such lessons will ‘ be learned,
however, only if you do your part
properly. (Reprinted from Chang
ing Times—'The Kiplimger Maga
zine).
Floors and Their Care
Better tools for floor care will
keep you off the Sow. Choose
long-handled tools and learn to
use them. The right length handle
for you is one that is long enough
for you to keep good posture while
working and short enough so that
it doesn’t get in the way.
Mrs. Edith MeGiamery, home
development specialist for the N.
C. Agricultural Extension Service,
suggests you try the iolldwing trils
Sor cleaning floors.
1. A wet mop that is large
enough to cover the surface ijulck
ly and is easy to <
andlodry. Bottu
type mops are available.
2. A dty mop that will remove
the dust and dirt efficiently is a
must. It should cover a large area
at one time, have a long handle,
and have a mop head which may
be removed and machine-washed.
Do not use an oily mop. Oil dulls
and softens the wax finish an^
dust clings to it. .
3. A dust pan with a long handle
eliminates stoog)ng. Find one with
a smooth edge that fits tightly 40
the floor. 3
4. A soft-bristled floor brush or
broom that will not scratch the
wax.
5. A wax supplier with a long
handle whenever possible.
6. A vacuum cleaner floor brush
to remove dust and grit.
7. An electric floor polisher to
develop a hard, protective coating
with wax. Heat developing from
motion helps to fuse the particles
of wax and gives a hard coating.
