geta hot, on who is to
Legislature than any in history.
Various interests have secured
the best help they can get, to see
that they are not the ones to pay
the increase in taxes.
'I believe the North Carolina
Motor Carriers do the beet job of
'lobbying”, if the way one exper
ienced legislator put it; “They
make it tough to legislate against
them.” “Their folks are so nice,
that it makes you feel that to do
any thing against them, would be
like striking your own mother.”
That is quite a compliment to a
very effective organization!
FBSE3NJDSHEP . . .There seems
to be a great deal of sentiment for
Oommisiaoner of insurance, char
logr Gold, to run for Governor in
1964. The insurance companies
would probably contribute heavily
to his campaign. They have not
fared well at all ig securing what
they consider sufficient rates un
der Commissioner Gold. Reminds
us of a remark made by Henry
Jordan, who was considering run
ning for Governor several years
ago — “Some of my friends . . .
and I suspect a lot of my enemies,
ba«Se been encouraging me to run.”
HNS & OUTS . . . There are a lot
of new faces showing up in the
various state offices' in Raleys—
and there will be a tot more as
supporters of Governor Sanford
take over. Reminds us of the say
ing contributed to former Adjutant
' General Caipus Wayndck, “There
are only two political groups; The
’Ins’ and fl»- ‘Orta’.”
DOG TRACKS . . . Don’t be sur
prised to see the proposition re
vised in the latter stages of the
legislature to permit the reopen
ing of the deg racing track near
Morehead Oily. Every poasitle
source of money to carry on Gov
ernor Sanford’s recommended pro
grams will be looked into—and
legal dog racing will probably be
proposed again. Florida bas used
the “easy method’’ of securing
money through both dog racing
and horse racing for many yean.
BOUGH SLEDDING . ... In look
ing over the members of this legis
lature, it appears that the present
session has in it more than the
usual number of strong and aide
men. Some one pet it jins way, “It
is going to be difficult to herd this
group down the wrong road.” No
doubt, there will be more organized
“grass roots’’ support for the Gov
ernor’s educational program than
there has been for any legislation
in a long time ... and one gets
the feeling, even at this stage, that
it is going to take all of the doing
possible to put it across.
Mind you — every one is for it —
but no one wants to pay for it. The
old saying: “What you get for
nothing is about worth what you
pay for it” may be true . . . but it
is just human nature to try to pass

TOUGH . . .''There are rumors
that William Copeland, Governor
Sanford’s legislative council, is
finding it difficult to sell many of
his old friends among the “Con
servative” members of the legis
lature, on the “Liberal’’ program
of his new boss. Store on this later.
