SENATOR SAM ERVIN * SAYS * Secretary of Labor Arthur Gold berg says the greatest problem confronting American labor is that at “men fearful of being throw out of work by constantly improving machines”. 1 agree that this is the most serious domestic problem this na tion faces, ua the immediate and foreseeable future. Industry after industry faces the necessity ai, automating its fac tories and assembly lines to com pete in a new age. The society in which we live de mands rapidly improved stand ards of living and automation is one of the keys to this progress. No one would urge that we halt progress and cease improvement in techologieal development for the sake of jobs, hot at the same time we must recognize that there are tremendous human problems in volved in this Second Industrial Revolution. Changes occur and jobs are wiped out. The men who lose their jobs must learn new skills and this takes training and time. Manage ment must accept this fact just Creech attended the funeral of his brother, James Creech, Monday at Smithfield. as labor must realize that auto mation means higher standards <* living for workers. It will require the utmost understanding and co operation by both labor and man agement to resolve this problem. MAN M SPACE — Moscow re ports that Major Gagarin haw be come the first human to orbit the earth demonstrate the tremendous psychological and propaganda ef fect this adventure has had upon the world. These progaiganda effects proba bly out-weigh the military poten tiality of the event. It is well to re member that since Sputnik was launched on October 4, 1957,, the Soviets have gained the news ho nors with a mere sixteen satellite launchings while the United States out-scored them with forty launch ings. The United States has lost the honor of sending the first man to ward the stars, but knowledge of life itself may be the prize if this challenge spurs u$ to place the first man on Venus or Mars. EICKMANN TKIAL — Conrad Adenauer’s visit to Washington has brough another facet to the Eich imann case. Chancellor Adenauer represents the West German Gov ernment that wants world respect. The German statesman is leading the German people back to a new role in the society of free nations. It is commendable that Germa ny has already tried 5,000 Nazis and seeks 70130 others fbr war crimes prosecutions. Adolph Eich mann’s crimes cast a moral sti gma on the entire German nation. No punishment can fit his mass murder of 6,000,000 Jews. SPRING USED CAR CLEARANCE! SO MUCH VARIETY! SO MANY VALUES! COME FIND THE ONE FOR YOU! MANY MAKES, MODELS AND COLORS!
