Kidd Brewer’s RALEIGH ROUNDUP” " I ' .‘jS His vH/V" , IiBGOSLA/TOV’E WIVES . . . The wives of the members of the leg islature have a tremendous influ ence on what laws will be en acted. This is true for many rea sons. The wives of many of the members are here in (Raleigh with them.' They see more at their hus bands than any one else does’, re gardless of what you hear about lobbyists to ttoe contrary. And wive just influence tiieir husbands, any way. We will always remember one night a 'group of us were listen ing to Senator Everette Jordan carrying On a- long winded dis course on his opinion and feeling with reference to some topic of current interest at the time. After a long' session of this, Senator Jordan caught Ms breath, and hesitated for the apparent purpose of getting a reaction to his com ments, so far. His beautiful, quiet, and charm ing wife took the opportunity to express her reaction — and we suspect she was expressing the majority (pinion, when she said, “Ah pooh.” Now the point is that no one else would have dared express the true reaction to Everette’S expressions. But since no one came to his res cue, we assumed he came to the conclusion that we felt much the same about the matter. Keep in mind that some of these members of the legislature have been coming to Raleigh every two years for a very long time—and that their wives have been com ing with them. These families have cemented strong and lasting friend sips over Ihe years. The hotels in Raleigh become sort of dormitor ies, and the rooms are visited much in the same way as families living in the same apartment build ings visit each other. The wives get together while their husbands are attending meet ings, and naturally they talk, and exchange ideas. “Do you know that Clara is against my bill to subsidize bird feed,” is the way one wife ex pressed it the other day. “And this, after all the work Henry and I did last session to get her bill to require her neighbor and a mil lion other people to muzzle her cat!” Seriously, the point is that the legislature is no different from any thing else. The women make the decisions, and their main problem is bow best to get it across so that “friend husband” will think that it was an original idea of his own — like the one he had when he asked her to many him! WHY ... A lot has been said and written recently about the interest in the selection of tile Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina and about the de sire by so many to be appointed to this group. Very little, if anything has been said about why this should be such a desirable ap pointment. Its about time some one took a closer look at this situ ation. : *• ' . THOUGHT . . . Just remember that the weather and legislature by nature get hotter as time goes on., ilt has been a late spring this year, in both cases. Edna Feriber’s 'CIMARRON' Cinemascope and Technicolor —WITH— Glenn Anne Ford Baxter "The Private Lives of Adam And Eve" —WITH— Mickey Mamie Rooney Van Doren Nothtog is more vtiital to the economy of the Third District than the Tobacco Program. The Dis trict derives more of its income from tobacco than from any other product. Ill view of this, I was shocked to leant that during the past sev eral years, the effective support price level on flue-cured tobacco has been kept below 90 per cent of parity — apparently deliberately. One of the most amazing angles to this is that it has been going on right under our noses, while we have been kept in the dark by the clever me of statistics. The law on support prices for flue-cured tobacco is very clear, chairman Cooley of the House Ag riculture Committee, together with all of the Congressmen from to ibacco-producing states have seen to that, supported by their count erparts in the Senate. The “gimmick” lies in the fact that the technical aspects of the program are bandied in the De partment of Agriculture by the Tobacco 'Division and his staff to prepare the statistics upon which support levels are based, and if they substitute their personal judgment and opinion of the Con gress as expressed in its legisla tive program, the intent of Con gress is not carried out. It appeaers that Joe R. Williams, the Director of the Tobacco Di vision, has felt that the quality of the tobacco is not as hjgjh :as it used to be and therefore, far mers are not entitled to the prices they used to get. The effect has been a general downgrading of tobacco,. with the result that the farmer who sold his tobacco to the Flue Cured Stab ilization Corporation has consist ently received less than the 90 per cent of parity that the law entitled him to be paid. Congressional leaders have not yet completed plans to rectify this situation, but tobacco growers may rest assured that before the next selling season, those of us in the iCtongress will insist that the Dir ector of the the Tobacco Division adjust the program to comply with the expressed will of Congress.
