National 4-H Club Congress-Meets In Chicago; Eight Tar Heels Attend un tne weekend alter thanks giving, more than 1,350 4-H boys and girls arnved in Chicago for one of the most important events on the 4-H calendar — the National 4-H Club Congress at the Conrad Hilton Hotel, November 26-3Q, “Of this number around 34 were from North Carolina,' reports L. v,R. Harrill," state 4-H leader. “These delegates, are state, regional and national winners .in 4-H pro jects and activities. And this proved' - to be not only the busiest but the' most exciting week of their life.” Many of them felt like kings and queens as they w?re entertained by more thap 55 business firms, foun dations, associations and individuals who provided funds fdr awards, meal functions and entertainment. Staying at the world’s largest hotel, they dined at meal functions attended by nearly. 2,000 people.. The boys and girls served as dis cussion leaders, presiding officers or participants at many events. They heard inspiring speeches and panel presentations. They enjoyed new cultural experiences in music and other arts. On Saturday night everyone at tended an evening “Get-Acquainted Party” at the new Edgewater Room of the Edgewater Beach Hotel. Sun day, the delegates were guests of Central Church of Chicago in the Grand Ballroom. During ’the of ficial opening of the Congress, the Wisconsin 4-H band and chorus performed. Arthur Fiedler conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra dur ing the “Pop Concert” at Orchestr ra Hall*, ' "Crystal Ball Fashions” was the theme of the ISth Dress Revue Tuesday afternoon. Rain, snow, or shine, the' stars twinkled bright ly on 4-H’ers at the John B. Clark Friendship Party at the Aragon Ballroom on Tuesday night. The party honored the national clothing winners. Wednesday afternoon the 4-H’ers visited the International Live stock Exposition and were guests of Wilson & Company at a box supper. They remained there t6 enjoy the horse show and rodeo. Chicago’s outstanding Museum of Science and Industry was visited by the delegates on Thursday morn ing. The annual banquet will high light and recognize the scholarship winners of the award program on Thursday evening. , Each 4-H delegate attending Congress attained a high degree of proficiency in a particular phase of 4-H work. Attendance at Con gress is ^n earned privilege and is a reward for the pursuit and achievement of excellence. Every activity during the week was plan ned to provide a significant educa tional experience. Emphasis on leadership was particularly stress ed during Congress ■ this jrear.
