♦he pruning chores Practically alt trees and. shrubs may be pruned , now — ^xcept the early blooming shrubs, which should not be pruned until after they flower next spring- , PrUne with ai purpose rather than' butcher with a vengeance. Mus cadine, ("Scuppembng") grapes pruned now will not bleed as badly as if pruned rather heavily if they have been neglected. Perhaps some evergreen shrubs have gotten unruly and need atten tion — ligustrum, Burfordi hollies and others. If they'have been ne glected, don’t try to correct all at once but rather gradually over a year or two. If you ever let pyra-. cantha get out of hand you/are in trouble unless it has planty of room and needs little or no priming. Keep these plants Shaped to suit your notion as they grow. Someone asked' the other dpyi about the best! time to prune crepe myrtles. Now, if they need it. Us 1 ually this plant is pruned very little. This is planting time, too, for all trees and shrubs. Fruit trees and grape vines, will have naked roots, so don’t let them dry out before' planting. Continue this operation until within about' four inches of the top of the .hole, then throw in loose soil. • ; . ■ Equal volume of peat mixed with i the top soil is a good practice. Shrubs that are balled and bur lapped can be planted any time during /he year, as can nursery stock in cans. Be sure not to work soil' when it', is -wet. K plants are received when soil is wet or frozen ,put them in a protected place and cov er the roots or ball with old saw dust. . _ A reminder, Azaleas and camellias will not tolerate deep planting.'
