Purvis faces the. capital. charge for the slaying last October of 38 year-old Julian. Baysden of Kins ton at a drive-in oafe just north of Kinston on the Gteenville highway. Purvis told investigating officers at the time of the staying that on the night of the shooting he had been acting as' “bouncer" for a crap game that was going on in the back of the cafe building. In this crap game, Purvis said Baysden lost a considerable»-amount of money and became angry- Purvis said he asked him to leave and then later after the game had'brok en up an argument took place be tween them outside the cafe, which ended in the shooting. Purvis claims that he was acting in self defense, but there was no evidence that Baysden was armed, and_ Purvis wfas not injured in the argument that preceded the slay ing. Two mobile X-ray units from the State Board of Health have been made available for this one-week survey. In previous Jones County surveys of this kind the schedule has been longer because only one unit was available, but this year the pace has been stepped up and the pub lic is urged to take advantage of this opportunity during this one week. . The units will be at Comfort and Pollocksville on April 3rd and 4th, and they will be in Maysville arid Trenton on April 5th, 6th, and 7th. New Kinston Post Office to Be Located On Caswell Street Last week the post office de partment announced .that it had chosen a site on the northwest :orner of Caswell and Independent streets for the location of Kinston’s new post office. Options obtained from the prop erty owners in this site-area have been exercised by the post office department but the options will be issisgned to the low bidder, who bvill build and lease the facility to the postal service. For months the debate raged imong Kinstonians on .the best tossible site for. the new facility. Some preferred to keep the post jffice where it was and buy space idjacent to it. F. Hill said Thurs lay morning that there had been only one name added to the list of Jones County candidates for office in the past week. This candidate is Willie Arthur Jones, who paid his filing fee Tuesday and became a candidate for constable in Tuckahoe Town ship. There is no constable in that township at present. The filing deadline for those in terested in having their names on the ballot on May 26th is Noon April 13th. ■> Wreck Wednesday Hurts Three Jones Countians Barms Bids Low on 3 of 36 Road Projects ' In bid openings heldby the State Highway Commission Tuesday in Raleigh' Barrtls Construction Com pany of Kinston bid low on three of the 36 projects on which bids were taken. The total cost of all 36 projects ran to just over $4 million. Man With Two Court Records Gets Prison For s Drunken Driving Arden Earl Thompson of Kins ton rout$ 4 Tuesday drew a 6 month prison term tor a ora ot fense of drunken driving, although this was the first such charge against him under -that name. Twice before Thompson, under the name of Arden Earl Stroud, had been found guilty of drunken driving/ Tuesday he was also charged with driving after the revocation of his driving license, but this charge was thrown out of court by Judge W. J; Bundy, since the state could produce no evidence to support the claim that his license had been re voked under what was admittedly his legal name of Arden Earl Thompson. John Phillips At Fort Gordon Pvt. John D. Phillips, son of Mr. and Mrs.' Welter Phillips of PoK locksville completed the eight-week telephone installation and repair course at The Signal Training Cen ter, Fort Gordon, Ga., March 9. Phillips was trained to install and repair various types of telephone equipment, including battery oper ated sub-stations and field tele phones. He entered* the Army last Octo ber and completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S. C. .Jkeii&tpFfcJtr-old-. soldier is a 1961 graduate of Jones Central High School in Trenton. CHECK CHARGE Oscar Lee Clark of 300 East Highland Avenue was arrested last week on warrants charging him with passing worthless checks. DRIVING CHARGE Frederick F. Santarpio of Bos ton, Mass., was booked last week in Kinston on a drunken driving charge. WHAT AGAIN? Alton Gardner of Kinston route 2, was tried last week for drunken driving, has another case on dock ’ et in superior court this week on the ^same charge, and over the weekend he was arrested again on the same charge. An accident a short distance east of Trenton on the Pollocksville Road Wednesday morning hospit alized two Jones Countians and in jured a third. Hospitalized are Thomas Lowery and James Edward Ervin, a pass enger in the Lowery-driven car, and injured was Larry Lee of Trenton route two. Cpl. O. C. Brock investigated the accident which took place at about 10 Wednesday morning. The accident apparently took place as Lowery made a left turri into the path of Lee’s car. Lowery was driving westwardly on NC 58 and Lee was headed east. Attendants at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston say Lowery suffered contusions and bruses in the chest area and injuries to his right leg and right arm. Ervin suffered head injuries and also injuries to his right leg and his right arm. Lee suffered a busted lip and the loss of some teeth, but he was not hospitalized. No indictment had been made Thursday morning but the investi gation is not closed. * One Jones Arrest The only arrest reported during the past week by Sheriff Brown Yates was that of Harold Mercer Whaley of Pollocksville route one, who is accused of drunken driving. Kinston Fat Stock Show April 12-13 Shaping Up As Biacrest'; 101 Steers The 23rd annual Coastal Plain Fat Stock Show whiGh will be held this year in Kinston on April 12th and 13th is shaping up as the big gest in the history of the show. At a meeting of the agricultural committee of the Chamber of Com merce last week it was revealed that 101 fat steers are consigned to the show from the four counties whose residents ar,e eligible to en ter animals. Duplin County leads- even Lenoir County with 3f) sleek beef animals consigned to the competition-.
