Jack S. started out as a pretty nice guy. He seemed headed for all Icings of success. Instead, he hit the skids before he was 3S. Jack wound up -just one of many nameless drunks, lost in a big city’s lonely streets. He leaves Skid Row now only for a few hdurs a day. boro. Dr. Weston Reed of Kinston was guest sp.eaker Sunday morning and evening at Memorial Baptist Church. • • • Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Louis Eu banks and the Herbert Jones fam ily Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Preston Campbell. Associational meeting held at the Brookwood Baptist church at Jacksonville last week were Mesdames C. W. Ger ock, W. E. Henderson, G. L. Eu-< banks, W. E. Raiford, J. M. Tho mas and C. Phillips. He looks for tetter hunting grounds where he cin; pan-handle ( quarters for his nqxt drink. Disgusting ? No. Jack is sick: He is ravaged by two diseases; alchor lism and TB. Jack S. is typical of 'many home less men who inhabit the Skid Rows of all our big cities. Last year, chest X-rays were taken of 9,000 men who slept in New York City’s Men’s Shelter during 1960. According to an article in The American Review of Respiratory Diseases, their X-rays turned up a total of 144 new cases of active TB. ' c This adds up to the “phenomen ally high rate of 16 per 1,000” men examined. The rate among the general public is less than one per 1,000, which is serious enough.' The germs that grow on Skid Row represent a potential threat to all big city residents. What can ) -be done, about- this problem? “Present • tuberculosis control measures. . .fall far short of what i? needed to .eradicate the dipease,” concludes The American Review. "The article recommends; » 1) More and better hospitals for Skid Row residents. 2) More help to get the men back to jus'ful lives when they leave the hospital. 3) A comprehensive medical care prograin for Skid Row — including treatment for chronic alcoholism. ;r Such a program could go a long way' toward wiping out TB on Skid Row.
