Harris, 40-year-old negro of the Oliver Crossroad section of Jones County, died within minutes after he was shot, Saturday after noon in the stomach with the1 full -jiast of a 12 gauge shotgun. Godfrey Wilder, another negro,' at whose home the, shooting took' plate, is being held without privi lege of bund, charged with the slay- ' ing. • ■ ... La Grange Area: Men Get Stiff Sentences In Federal Court - ’William Jason Wood and Maceo Samuel Clinton' of the La Grange section of western Lenoir County drew stiff penalties for being caught unloading empty , fruit jars near a whisky still site in March of this year in Jones County. Wood, a first liquor law violator, drew an 18-month prison term, suspended on payment of a $1,000 fine and the further condition that he remain on probation for three years. Clinton, a negro, had two' other liquor violatipns against his record in the past 18 months so Judge Leads Clerk d Primary Can led by Nick Noble v Walter Percy Henderson, who conducted a door-to-door campaign that missed very few eligible voters in 'the race for Jones County Sup erior Court Clerk, came out well on top, of the other- four contenders with 8884 of the 2303 votes cast. Henderson's ^lead, however, was not enough to give him the nec essary numerical majority of 1151 yotes. This1 makes it possible tor George “Nick” Noble, who run .second with *618 votes to call for * Second primary if he desires. -William Henry Hammond ran third,: well behind Noble wtih 379 Votes, while Macy Mallard, the only woman in the clerk race, came in ^th with 322 votes. “Carl Flowers Jr. ran a poor fifth with oii^y.'MO votes. Henderson, who was fired from * his jolt with the ABC board when he asked for leave to run for clerk, campaigned in every corner of the county on the platform that all of the rest of the candidates had a job or a business and that he sim .ply needed the job worse than' either of- the others. In his campaign literature Hen derson 'spoke flatteringly of his op ponents, admitting that * all five were well qualified to hold the job, but he insisted personally and frequently that of the five he need ed the job Vnost. . The people of the county appar ently like the direct approach and gave Henderson the solid lead of 166 votes over the No. 2 candidate. John Larkins refused to suspend his prison term. Noble has until Noon Monday 0 maize his decision and on Thursday morning Election- Board. Chairman W.*F Hill said that he had received no word from Noble one way or the other on his in tentions. s'*. If Noble does ask for a 2nd pri mary it will be held on June 23rd. Yates Has No Trouble WinningThird Term Incumbent Sheriff Bro*n Yates had no difficulty Saturday id win ning his 3rd fu}l term as the chief law enforcement officer of Jones County, defeating his Only oppon ent, Wayne Jarman, by better than a 3-to-l count, to 370.- ' ' Yates “rah scared” in only one precinct, Beaver Creek where he nosed out Jarman 92-to-90. vTtes said one troublesome maker of moonshine whisky in that town ship, that he has not been able to nail, and a recently moved in gypsy fortune teller had caused him to come close to losing in that end of the county. In the other seven voting pre cincts Yates had no trouble, and overwhelmed Jarman in Pollocks ville Township 512-to-53. ON PROJECT MERCURY James L.
