Help For Hyannis The only question we have about the sending of “Freedom Riders” to Hyannis, and the other “Homes of Freedom” in the north is: Why has the South waked so long to prove that it still has a sense of humor ? Certainly it is brutal to a degree to ex ploit negro ' families who have , heard and who believe the siren’s song of the north, - but it is the north that started this shoot ing match, and nothing will'deflate a pomp ous do-gooder' more quickly than having to put into practice what he has been preach ing. - - " . . So long as the Kennedy Family, from the ,lily-whiteness'of its summer home of Cape Cod, can tell Southern counties with a ma jority of its population negro how to solve the racial problem, it is perfectly Kosher — or Catholic, if you prefer a more germane expletive, for them the Southerners to offer to send a handfull of negroes north so. the do-gooders can practice their doing, good at home. :T >. High - Level Confusion President Kennedy and his chief econo mic aides have' said that a tax cut is needed to bolster the nation’s economy. , But the man in charge of the tax-cutting, Or tax-raising departnfept; House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Wilbur Mills of Arkansas, doesn’t see it thataway. Mills knows as much about government, and perhaps as much about the national economy as* either Kennedy or Dillon and his attitude is that cutting income when spending is being expanded is, on its face ridiculous. «£ - We cannot understand how the insolven cy of the federal government, even if it -is theoretical, can be a boost to the nation’s economy. 1 y In an era of 'unprecedented prosperity it seems childish to suggest cutting taxes when the federal government is running sL defi cit that is counted in the billions each year. The nation should be told that we either must cut governmental speridihg or have. taxes increased ; not. that>we , should in crease government spending 'while • de creasing taxes. - ~ ■ •- t ■ (■ The Ultimate Horror ■ j^it -U' In a generation that has included the trench slaughter of World War . I, the tar get practice on Ethiopian tribesmen by Mussolini’s jackals, the fratricidal proving ground of Spain's civil war, the- genocidal insanity of the Germans, and the malicious sadism; , of the- conquering Japanese it re mains to the so-civilized Frenchmen in Al geria to perpetrate-the ultimate hbrror. the study of nan’s inhumanity to man is written in gore, but the reckless murder of women ’and children now going oh in Al geria is a low ebb in the tide df man’s surg ing. emotions* » '‘•it* 1 * s True, the innocent of Algeria are no less dead than those who died in Hitler’s gas chambers, under Allied saturation bombing pravity. The white, Catholic French, who hawf been in; Algeria for' generations are fight ing like cornered rats to prevent their home land being surrendered to the dark, Islamic Arabs, who outnumber th,em about 4-to-i in thU bloody northern tip, of Africa. This does not excuse, but it does explain the unimaginable brutality of this organized murder. • Too, the Algerian terror is a of both religious - • and‘ racial which^ when added to the econ. commit in the naine of world < badly needed, and long delayed ends. But both steps were taken at high official levels; where steps are not carelessly taken, and by people who generally know where they are going when they start. • .y ^ . It-would be hard to assign a priority to either, the colleges or the revamped pay system for teachers, but sihce one requires considerable capital expenditure and the other only requires administrative decision it is likely, We hope, that the improved pay system will be realised before the 14 addi tional community colleges. But neither should be stymied a single second beyond the absolute minimum time need t'o put them to work. / Please, Parents Already "'this year physicians in Kinston hospitals have treated five small children for poison, and luckily each is recovering, hut in the past we have been suffering an average of three child deaths a year in Kinston hospitals alone because of this brut tol rornlpCcnPCQ Kv nAfflltSi tal carelessness by parents: Every home today has a large, and grow ing'collection of deadly poisons that are use ful to mankind when prSperly used but are •deadly — agonizingly deadly when swallow ed Ky an infant. , . . \ The dangerous ages are from 1 to 4, doc tors agree., From the time the child gets big enough to toddle around, until his reason develops to that point where he wil) not taste qjf everything he comes upon. , , ^ But children and adults accidentally swal low these poison from time to time when' they are left Beside other medicines or foodstuffs. ■. < • „ So every home — and especially every farm home ought to have a Special and safe place to keep poisons, beyond the reach of infants and where the danger of accident wiH not imperil adults. Traffic-jammed and money-starved met ropolitan areas are watching, Miami, Flori da — or more correctly Dade.County, Flori da Where a metropolitan government five years ago replaced the patchwork of county and municipal governments that compound ed the confusion, of that booming, tip of Florida. Savings and efficiency of operation have been far greater than were, dreamed when the voters originally installed this system. ' , 1 are' fighting at* terrible odds against vic tory,\ and sanity. r The South turned to Ku Klux Klan rule, murder, arson and fear when a distant pow er sought to impose by military force 'and political trickery institutions that were in tolerable-upon a defeated people, whose only resource was courage and desperation. Algeria is the Confederacy of French history. * The Lenoir 403 West JACK Saturday night I was honored by being asked to speak to the annual meeting of the alumni of Southwood .High School. Simply being with this group was enough for a pleasant1 evening, bht when it was combined with an excellent meal and 40 minutes of stimulating conversation it be it was an ex came mote than a' 'pleasure perience. ' ' 'i I neithei- felt capable nor inclined to at tempt a formal speech to this group, a ma jority of whom know me' well, so I tried a different approach, and I enjoyed it, wheth er the alumni and their guests did or not. I told the group that they could choose the subjects of my talk and determine the length of time I was on my feet. This was done by asking all of those who had the inclination' to bring up any subject —■ since newsmen are supposed to be “jacks of all trades,” and are also very free with their opinions. ; This we did for 45 minutes, and it pleased me greatly not only to be permitted to talk that long to a group that convinced me that it was interested but to be stimulated by the number, range and depth of the questions asked. ~r: ~ This was an amazingly well informed, group, whose interests ranged from for eign aid to communists down to the send ing pf destitute negroes to Hyannis . My curiosity was, pleasantly surprised by the range of questioning, since not a single question was on a subject that would be classed as trivial. The tax structure, the ASC scandal in Texas, integration of North' Carolina schools, the main issue of tfie 1964 governor race, the wisdom of foreign aid are some of the subjects this group was interested in, and I hope that I was able to give them a little more information than they had before on these subjects, and cer tainly, whether I gave them any information or not, they did get my opinions on each. It was also pleasant to see the school spirit of these relatively young men and women — since it included only those class es from 1949 forward. ’They made a Graing er High graduate of ’34 feel rather ancient, When they started talking about their “old timers.” Although our crystal ball doesn’t have a Very high batting average, we have dusted it off to venture this prediction: Not guilty will be the verdict on all counts for all de fendants, &» the political circus that is- go ing on in Raleigh against Kidd Brewer, Robert Burch and Son and three New Jer sey sign. companies. • ' “Better to be lucky than richseems to ap ply to the 1962 Kinston Eagles,, who player their first 28 home games without a rain out game, and before more than 61,000 fans Another happy reflection on this group was the-work those are doing who have finished their college educations, and among the more recent Southwood grads it was grati fying to see such a large percentage going to college. • This group, the oldest of which graduated from high school 15 years after I did, rep resents the generation that will be running the; nation in another decade. If they are representative, and I see no good reason yhy they should not be; then our nation has nothing to fear because it will be in better hands then, than it iS now.
