Mrs. Harper Gray of Route 2 Trenton located an old wash stand af the home of her husband’s grandmother. She contacted her Home Agent for directions of re finishing. In spite of the fun her husband and daughter made of her, she re finished this furniture, and now has a lovely side piece for her living room. Mrs. Gray proceeded in the fol lowing way: 1. The furniture was .cleaned and sanded carefully, and deep scratch es filled. 2. An oil stain of red mahogany was prepared and applied and rub bed with an old nylon stocking - then allowed to dry for at least 24 hours. (This usually requires two applications.) 3. A stain sealer with a varnish base was used to finish the furni ture. When dry, this was rubbed with 2/o steel wool and wiped clean with a cloth dampened in turpen tne. 4. A light wax may be applied or a good furniture polish, to protect the surface. 5. After shopping around, Mrs. Gray located hardware of the ori ginal type, and attached to the drawer and doors. This was an unwise recom mendation which will not solve the problems confronting the people of irsutMinn:-''Ti'. Mississippi;. When all is said, racial problems can be 'solved only by good will, in telligence, and patience on the lo cal level where men and women live, move, and have their being. Solutions not based on human ex perience and wis'dom cannot be dic tated from above, either by admin istrators .holding executive offices, or legislators occupying legislative Offices, or judges wearing judicial] robes. If the Commission's fecommen datibhs were adopted, it would cer tainly be contrary to our system of government. The President of the United States has no legislative power, ind therefore has1 no power to add any additional conditions or terms to the acts of. Congress in providing for federal i^ants to any state, community, or group of in dividuals otherwise eligible to re ceive federal funds. Congress has wisely refrained from placing con-; ditions on grants which would force people to abrogate their right to ^govern themselves under local laws. Advocates of such impractical measures <inly add to the racial problems. Such problems cannot be solved' by overriding the will of contact your Home Agent. stated that the F.rstPrire, a new 1963 Falcon Convertible was won by Vernon Brown of Gloucester, Virginia.
