It remains to be seen, of course, whether the Sentaor’s descendants a generation of so from now will be as proud of Great Grandpa Luther’s position in this instance, as he imagines. Mostly, we suspect, Senator Hamilton was merely irritated at having been outmaneuvered in a parliamentary showdown. He let his temper get the best of him and, sadly, ended up in the curious pos ture of being in favor of requiring the taxpayers of North Carolina to : provide a forum for those who are ; dedicated to the destruction of Am erica. Which, of course, goes far be yound the realm of “freedom of i speech,” not to mention common. ; sense. Fortunately, the vast ma- i jority of the members of the Gen- i eral Assembly were aware of this. I Moreover, if we are any judge of < the public mood, the law banning i Communists from our campuses will ; be greeted by overwhelming ap- i proval by the general public. < The News and Oberver had one i aspect of this whole affair pretty i well sized up in its editorial com- i ment of Wednesday. The paper, predictably distressed by the pass age of the law, observed that the action amounted to a “vote of no :onfidence” in the officials of state Dwned colleges and universities. This, we believe, is precisely the :ase and it should provoke some serious meditation among the of ficials involved. No one can say that they did not isk for it. No one can say that they were not given adequate warning if the doubts and fears spreading 1 fhroughout the state regarding :hings taking place on our tax-sup lorted campuses. We suspect that rom now one, superficial answers irom the campuses will not be :nough. The people are beginning :o understand that there is a dif erence between academic freedom ind academic foolishness. Surely it is time for all to realize hat the Communist campaign for vorld domination is not merely a ;ame of tinker toys. It was not an die exercise when orders were ent out from Moscow in 1961 di recting Communist agents to infil rate the college campuses of Am rica, to brainwash fertile and im aature minds, to spread confusion ,nd unrest. Just because a Commu list plan happens to be out in the ipen does not mean that it is a aere ineffectual gesture. The Com nunist are in business, and they lean business. So, those who regard the law ■ ' ~ ' WHEN YOU NEED AMBULANCE SERVICE CALL Garner’s Funeral Home DIAL JA 3-2124 or JA 3-2125 , ™ ! ', Ambulance Equipped With Oxygen passed by the legislature as “un warranted" or "unnecessary” or“ill advisedf are simply unaware of obvious dangerous. Too many of our collgee officials have been too unconcerned and too disinterested — almost to the ifjint of arrogance. For example, when the Chapel Hill American Legion Post expressed concern about certain leftist activ ities at the University last year, the Legionnaires were impolitely rebuf fed and ignored by the two top of ficials of the University — and by the Governor of North Carolina. Ironically, this occurred within 48 hours after J. Edgar Hoover had issued a nationwide warning about the menance of communist infiltra tion of college campuses. It would be easy to pretend that there is no danger, and let it go at that. But the weight of evidence is piling up to the contrary. All around the world communism is using the college campus as a springboard into complacent and helpless socie ties. American campuses provide a chilling measurement of the haz ards. University and college officials are in no position to demand pub lic confidence. They must earn it. They are public servants, paid with tax funds, and therefore answerable to the public. The public has been asking for answers to questions for a great while and, receiving none, has taken action through their elected representatives. I he Metropolitan Police Depart ment in Washington, D. C. is lit erally begging for applicants to fill what appears to be quite a few positions now vacant in its ranks. Starting salaries are $5,650, in creasing to $8,050 after so many years of service. Vacation times ranges from thirteen to twenty-six days, and there is a 30-day sick leave, plus more if sickness is traceable to the service. Free med ical care is provided along with un- 1 iforms and equipment. There is a favorable retirement the legislature is all about. It was not introduced on a whim,[' or en acted without demand. Indeed, it simply reflects a growing concern and apprehension throughout the state. The people are demanding assurances that their money and their educational facilities are be ing used properly, and not abused in the name of “academic freedom.” They want to be certain that academic freedom and academic responsibility are going hand in hand. They are asking for no more than they deserve. . plan, and liberal*-family protection is offered. Why should there be vacancies vhen there is substantial remuner ition for those wh& serve ? It would seem that young men would be damoring for jobs, especially in the showcase city of the world. There must be some cause for he vacanc&ge'^kjpgybe, that fellow serving as attOTWy general would lo well to learn and announce the sauses for the vacancies.
