Both newspapers suggested that school teachers, having received the tickets, had therefore felt compell ed to attend the Manion speech. Which, insofar as we are concern ed, is a calculated insult to the teachers themselves. In any event, neither newspaper had yet produc ed a teacher who felt- such compul sion. So, how silly can you get? No body imagined that the Raleigh newspapers would jump with joy over Clarence Manion’s coming to town. Dr. Manion preaches a doc trine that the newspapers studious ly suppress. What’s more Manion operates from an impressive port tono. .tie is a distinguished educa tor, having headed the law school at Notre Dame University for many years. He is a respected constitu tional lawyer and historian. He is also effectively outspoken in his belief that modern-day politicians and politics of the type that the Raleigh newspapers advocate and promote — afe leading this nation down the road to destruction of its freedoms. It thus becomes apparent, then, that what "shocked": the Raleigh newspapers was the fact that thous ands of people turned out to cheer Dean Manion, and that the audi ence included scores of school teachers. Plainly, in the minds of the Raleigh editors, this was car rying "academic freedom” too far! It is important to bear in mind that Dean Manion did not speak on the campus of any school or college. He spoke in a public audi torium, rented for the occasion by the. organization that sponsored — FARMS WANTED 43 ■4 CONTACT W. W. And that or ganization, whether the newspap ers like it or not, is composed of citizens who have done most to build their community and its in stitutions. So, when the newspapers decribe the organziation known as “Citi zens for the Preservation of Con stitutional Government" as a “right wing” group, then the newspapers are telling more about themselves than they are about the organiza tion they attack. But there is one further consid eration. It should not-be overlook ed that these same newspapers have repeatedly condemned the North Carolina legislature for enacting a law prohibiting Communists from free use of state-owned facilities on our college campuses. They have distorted the meaning and the intent of the law, they have piously cried that there is no danger in permit ting Communists to use their brain washing techniques on our young people. But when a noted and re spected constitutional lawyer comes to town, preaching Americanism and advocating a return to constitution al principles, the newspapers throw their thinking apparatus in reverse. Fortunately, nobody has been fool1 ed by this transparent display of Curious logic. Dean Manion’s views speak for themselves, and so do the contrasting views of the Ral eigh area is now being offered an Abruzzi Rye Moregrain Oats Wakcland Wheat Rye Grass Fescue Ladino Clover Bring Us Your A. Cit izens hereabouts ought to be; grate-v ful to the Citizens for the Preserva tion of Constitutional Government for helping provide “the other side” in matters of contemporary politics, government and philosophy. Dean Qarence Manion may be a "rightwing extremist”. That de pends upon who is doing the de fining. We doubt that many who heard him will agree with the Ral eigh newspapers’ appraisal of the man. He knows his history; he knows his constitution. And he knows what freedom is — and when freedom is being destroyed. And though he quoted Barry Goldwater* and was cheered when he did so, he also quoted Woodrow Wilson and Sam Ervin — and was also cheered. As a Democrat, Clar ence Manion was obviously being non-partisan. City School Superin tendent Jesse Sanderson was thus correct in appraising him as such, regardless of what implications the Raleigh press attempted to the con trary. Dean Clarence Manion did not "intrude in the schools." If he sue- N ceeded in intruding upon the thought control of the Raleigh newspapers, then good for him and thank the Lord for him. We hope that the Citizens for the Preserva tion of Constitutional Government bring more and more “intruders" to Raleigh in the weeks and months to come.
