joyed a hayride Thursday night
with a weiner roast afterwards. It
was given for the youths on Youth

urday for Marilynn K. Metts, 2,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joel
Wayne Metts of Trenton route 2,
who was killed last Thursday in a
truck accident.
GARDEN TIME
I am in trouble. Every now and
then, in a weak moment, I stick
my neck out and get it caught in
a tight noose. This time there are
approximately 1,000 ladies tugging
at the rope (isn’t one enough?)
They are members of 40 garden
clubs in Raleigh involved in a pro
ject called “HANDS" — “Home
and Area Development Sponsors,”
and .they have been working real
hard to win a portion of the $2,000
to be offered in cash prizes. I have
the evidence in 40 voluminous re
ports of accomplishment.
The other two judges, a city
planner and a lady high-up in gar
den circles, have more knowledge
of what this is all about than I do
so they are depending on- me to
supply the objectiveness necessary to
evaluate the scrapbooks.
The judges are invited to attend
an aivards banquet later this montH.

Army, Europe, Championship
Small Arms Matches held in Gra
fenwohr, Germany, April 2-14.
The soldier-shooters, represent
ing 13 major Commands of the
Army in Europe, will be compet
ing for rifle, pistol and automatic
rifle championships.
The 29-year-old soldier, son of
William C. Howard, 418 E. Vernon
Ave. in Kinston, is a surveyor in
V Corps, Army Marksmanship Unit
in Germany.
He entere<f the Army in June
1958 and arrived overseas on this
tour of duty in November 1962.
Howard attended Grainger High
School. His mother, Mrs. Margret
D. Jones, lives at 1207 W. Agarita,
San Antonio, Tex.
For myself, I think I will find it
convenient to be trout fishing in
the headwaters of Toe River or on
a secluded beach at the coast.
Laying all jokes aside, this is an
absorbing and rich experience. I
have already spent eight uninter
rupted hours (except to refill my
pipe) and am- not half done. It is
the best opportunity I have ever
had to study social ecology.
In the first place I should Tike
to be highly complimentary of this
HANDS program sponsored by the
Raleigh Council of Garden Clubs.
It is amazing to me what has and
is being accomplished and the spir
it of unselfishness and cooperation
that is evident in all reports.
I feel "rather positive that this
program is. doing more to make
Raleigh a beautiful city than any
other sponsored program. When
over 1,000 citizens present a united
front the city fathers listen. The
manner in which the municipal
government has responded, and as
getting into full swing now. Last
Monday the J<T team met James
Kenan for a double-header which
was split between Jhe two teams
with the Rockets winning one by
a score of 18-4. James Kenan took
the other by ,a score of 4-3. On
the same day, the JV Rockets took
The big event at Jones Central
this week is, of course, the Junior
Senior Prom. From what we hear
now, the prom is going to be -very
beautfiul, and the Juniors have
worked hard to plan it.
Em sure that everyone is • quite
aware of the guerilla warfare that
went on in the county last week.
They had to call the maneuvers off
on Wednesday night because the
citizens of Jones County (especial
ly the students at Jones Central)
were helping the guerillas so much
that they .were actually winning!
On Thursday, Captain Wilkerson,
the leader of the guerilla forces,
came to Jones Central to talk to
the students. He thanked us for

reminded us that the SOS, which
was the division that the guerillas
were fighting, has an outstanding
combat record, and that their com
mander, Colonel Webel has been
awarded every medal that the U.S.

ers were purchased. But the judge
is primarily concerned with what

case, I have placed major emphas

ments; and participation in civic
affairs and programs.
Some of the accomplishments are7:
development of parks; area zoning;
installing curbs and paving streets;
cleaning up vacant lots; beautify
ing area entrances; landscaping
school grounds; installation of
public utilities in recent annexed
areas; flowers for hospitals and
county homes; and above all, im
provement of the individual home
environment.

was placed on probation because
he failed too many students. This
may be of some consolation to
some students at JC. ITn sure that
