MAYSVILLE NEWS By Mr*. Nolan Jonas Mrs. Hughes is Hostess to Club Mrs. Charles Hughes was hos tess to the Greenleaf Garden Club last Tuesday evening. Mrs. W. E. Mattocks presided. The club chaplain, Mrs. W. E. Raiford, opened with scripture readings from St. Matthew. Af terwards, she made comments on the flower of the month, the violet. During the business portion, the group discussed plans for landscaping the grounds around the new water system and they were asked to keep in mind the Southeastern Flower and Gar den Show which is to be held in Charlotte March 6-13. They also voted to send a contribu tion to the Brunswick Town Na ture Trail. Mrs. Mattocks appointed a committe to select and present at the next meeting a slate of officers to be elected to serve during the coming year. On the committee were Mesdames W. E. Raiford, chairman, Robert Mattocks, Starling Pelletier, E. H. Bryant and J. C. Foscue. The club’s president, Mrs. Mattocks, presented the pro gram “Conservation of Flowers”. This included house plant, pe rennials, annuals, bulbs, roses, azaleas and camelias. She dis cussed the care, fertilization, pruning, spraying and proper soil drainage. Following adjournment, the hostess served chocolate cake topped with whipped cream and coffee. In addition to those nam ed, Mrs. A. H. McDaniel, N. N. Mattocks and Billie Barbee were present. Rickey Jones is Party Honoree Rickey Jones celebrated his fourth birthday at a party given him by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Jones, at their home in Maysville Saturday afternoon. The group enjoyed playing games and later were served ice cream, birthday cake and soft drinks. Those attending were: Rod ney, Kelvin and Sharon Mead ows, Ann Marie, John and Rob erta Jones, Angie and Timmie Batts. Fellowship Circle Meets on Monday The Bible and The Life With in was the program subject at the Monday evening meeting of the Fellowship Circle which met in the social room of the Meth odist Church. Mrs. Nolan Jones was in charge of the program, opening with reading of the 150th Psalm as a prayer, after which the group sang “Take Time To Be Holy.” Mrs. Jones then introduced the program and with Miss Nell Jones, led the discussion fol lowing two techniques, Follow the Leader and Follow the Thought. A general discussion was held afterwards. Prayer con cluded the program. During the business hour, rou tine reports were heard and the group was asked to. consider changing their meeting night. After the benediction, Mrs. F. H. Pruitt and Mrs. Jones serv ed refreshments. PERSONALS Mrs. A. H. McDaniel was the Sunday overnight guest of Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Thompson in New Bern. Monday they visit ed the Thompson’s daughter, Martha, at East Carolina and other friends in Greenville. * * * Mrs. Merle Jones was a visitor of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Morton, at Kellum one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Dunbar and son, Mark, were over from Kinston Sunday visiting Mrs. Eddie Dunbar. * * * Mrs. N. N. Mattocks was a Wednesday overnight guest of the George Mewborns in Snow Hill and a Thursday overnight guest of Mrs. Ruby Tyndall in Kinston. Saturday, she visited the Curt Hollands at Silverdale. * * * Mrs. Don Hare and Mrs. Lol lie Collins of Jacksonville were here Monday afternoon to vis it Mr. and Mrs. Harry Collins and Mr. and Mrs. Hubert White. * * * Visiting the J. C. Foscues Sun day were Mrs. Liza Hammond and Ethelyn Foscue of Trenton. Mrs. Everett Meadows is spend ing this week in Pembroke with her parents. * * * Mrs. Don Davidson was here last week from Jacksonville, Fla. visiting relatives. * * * Letha Pridgen of Trenton vis ited the R. L. Mattocks and Mrs. Roland Pridgen here last week end. * * * Ralph Johnson has been here from Tennessee for a few days visiting his family. * * * Mrs. and Mrs. Nolan Jones, Dianne and Janice were in Farmville Sunday visiting Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Griffis. * * * Mrs. A. B. Bracey was a Fri day visitor of the A1 Aversas and L. N. Latham at Riverdale. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Conway spent Sunday in New Bern with their son, Harold, and family. Sunday afternoon, Mrs. G. L. Mattocks was over to visit them. * * * Mrs. Melvin Pierce and baby son of Jacksonville were visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Manley Howard Sunday. * * * Mrs. Etta Collins of New Bern spent a few days last week with the Lawrence Smiths. * * * Visiting Mrs. C. R. Morgan Sunday were Mrs. Minnie Mor ton and Mrs. Mildred Thomas of Jacksonville. * * * Joe Mattocks of Norfolk was here several days last week vis iting his family. Mrs. S. E. Brown and Mrs. Harold Brown were Friday vis itors of Mrs. Leone Moore in New Bern. * * * Mrs. Mabel Johnson of Alex andria, Va. visited Mrs. Ralph Johnson Friday. Amy Wetherington, accompa nied by a friend, of Jackson ville, were Sunday night visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Etheridge Jones. « * * Albert Bracey and Barry Henderson of Pembroke State College spent the weekend with their families. * * * Mrs. Henry Gerock Jr. was in Augusta, Ga. to spend the weekend with Dr. Gerock. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Conway were visitors of Mrs. Ida Jones in the Hopewell Community Sunday afternoon. * * * The Roland Nelsons of Ports mouth, Va. were here during the weekend visiting his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Nelson. * * * Miss Patsy Eubanks of Green ville spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. G. L. Patients in the Craven County hospital in New Bern include Mrs. George Yancey, Mrs. Carl Waters and Mrs. Jones, grand mother of Joe and Leonard Thompson. On Tuesday night, our Rockets and Rock ettess played host to the South Lenoir Rebels. The first half of the girls’ game was close. However, South Lenoir racked up a 15-point lead in the third quarter. Even though our Rockettes out-scored the Rebels 15 to 8 in the fourth quarter, South Lenoir maintain ed the lead and won by a score of 43-35. Sheila Black, with 13 points, led the scoring for Jones Central, and Polly Westbrook, also with 13 points, led South Lenoir’s scoring. The JC boys had no trouble in the first half of their game, as they took a lead of 17 points. South Lenoir raillied in the sec ond half, but Jones Central took the game by a score of 85-80. Craig Hill, with 17 points, led the scoring for the Rebels, while Barry Henderson, with 30 points, and Jimmy DeBruhl, with 20 points, led the JC scor ing. On Friday night, February 18, the Jones Central teams tra veled to meet the Richlands Wildcats. Though the score at the end of the first half of the girls’ game stood at 17-17, our Rock ets came on to win by a score of 39-35. Bonnie Thompson, with 12 points, led the scoring for Richlands, while Barbara Ken nedy and Sheila Black led the JC scoring. Barbara scored 17 points and Sheila scored 11 points. Our Rockets had no trouble in winning the boys’ game by a score of 67-49. Barry Hender son with 19 points and Dickie Murphy with 17 points led the scoring for Jones Central. Michael O’Bryan will be trav eling to Chapel Hill this week end for his final interview as a candidate for the Morehead Scholarship. We want to wish Mike the best of luck. The East Central Conference tournament games are being played in Kenansville. We have high hopes for both our girls’ team and our boys’ team. The final results will be announced after the final games on Sat urday night, February 27.
