I sure ly did. I spent the Weekend with relatives and friends at Cedar Island, a small island just off the coast. The island has recent ly become famous as a vacation spot because of tke Cedar Is land - Ocracoke ferry which is located there. Of course, there was an unusually large group of tourists on hand for the 4th of July, partially because of the ferry and partially because of the annual “Pony-Penning.” Every year on the Fourth of July the islanders stage a round up of the numerous wild horses which roam the area. Some of the horses are sold, and the re mainder are set free at the end of the day. The event is very interesting to watch. With the coming increase in ferry capacities, Cedar Island is expected to become even more popular as a vacation spot. Even though the Fourth of July has passed, I would still like to mention the fact that the official name of this holi day is Independence Day. As everyone knows, it is a day which commemorates the sign ing of our Declaration of Inde pendence. Yes, we all know this, but we sometimes tend to for get. It seems to me that with each passing year, less and less attention is paid to the real meaning of this day. In the world of today, I believe that is is especially important that all Americans do everything poss ible to see that our nation re mains “a government of the peo ple, by the people, and for the people.” Maybe it Would be a good thing for all of us if we took a moment now and them to remember our national heritage. Wonder... What budding young teenag er got a “rude awakening” last Sunday? What Pollocksville girl has developed a sudden interest in skin diving? HEARD: Betty Jo Hudson say ing, “People!” ALSO HEARD: Someone say ing, “We weren’t really going that fast; it just seemed that way!” . - LOANS on Diamonds, Watches Televisions, Silver Musical Instruments Cameras Typewriters Guns Sewing Machines PHILLIPS LOAN & JEWELERS 311 N.
