The Stars in Our Flag: 45 UTAH-JANUARY 4,1896 THE BEEHIVE STATE—CAPITAL: SALT LAKE CITY The story of Utah is in reality the story of the search for a promised land where the Mormons could practice their faith unmo lested. 1 Probably the first white men to see Utah were Span ish explorers early in the 16th century. But two priests, Escalante and Dom ineque, are known to have entered along the White River in their search for a direct link between Santa Fe, N. M., and Monterey, Calif. The fur trappers came next and actually opened the land for later settlers. Jim Bridges, of mountain fame, discovered the Great Salt Lake and Jedediah Smith was first to cross the Salt Desert. Fremont and Carson explored and mapped the territory in 1843-1845. But it was the Mormons, who had met with religious opposition from New York all across the country, who were the real founders of Utah. After Joseph Smith was murdered in Carthage, 111., Brigham Young took over the leadership of the Mormons. He led his follow ers across the Mississippi and, by way of a “vision," was carried to the Great Salt Lake Valley . . . the promised land. He made the law of the church the law of the land. All lands, water and timber were community owned. He fed the Indians rather than fight them and the Mormons set about build ing their domain. This land belonged to Mex r i ico, but at the end of the Mexican War the Guada loupe Hidalgo Treaty of 1846 gave the territory to the United States. In Decem ber of that year Young pressed for state admission rights for what he called Deseret, but in 1850 Con gress granted territorial status in the name of Utah. Young was the governor. Trouble with the govern ment over the Mormon prac tice of polygamy led to many conflicts. Federal troops were sent to Utah to curb the-rebels. The Utah War followed in 1857. After a compromise was reached and federal troops withdrew, the Mormons ran into trouble with the In dians, who wanted to deal in slave trade. The result was the Ute-Black Hawk War, 1865-1868. State admission was re fused Utah in 1849, 1856, 1862 and 1887 because of the insistence of the prac tice of polygamy. Finally, in 1890, the Mormons outlawed the practice of plural mar riage and Jan. 4, 1896, Utah became the 45th state.
