OTHER EDITORS SAY WRAL VIEWPOINT Liberals Deny Viewpoint Of All Others There is justified amusement to be found in the angry pro tests being registered by The News and Observer against some tort of recorded telephone an nouncements which, in the news paper’s view, are “bate messag es” being distributed by “char acter assassins”.. We haven’t heard the messages, and have no particular interest in hear ing them. Still, when The News and Observer commences to talk about character assassins, there will be many to suggest that it takes one to know one. We may be witnessing the ultimate in the pot’s calling the kettle black. Apparently the recorded tel ephone messages have been di rected at certain activities of the National Council of Church es. The information contained in the messages may indeed be false and unfair. If so, it is re grettable that the sponsors of the messages did not choose to select valid information about the National Council of Church es which needs to be brought to the attention of church mem bers who may be contributing, knowingly or unknowingly, to that strange organization. There are many respected churchmen who are genuinely disturbed about the activities of the National Council of Church es. Much careful research has been done, and many thought ful evaluations have been made of the council’s role in stirring up unrest — and, yes, hatred — across the land. We have in mind, for example, North Car olinians such as Dr. G. Aiken Taylor and Dr. L. Nelson Bell, both Presbyterians, both relig ious editors. Dr. Bell, by way of further identification, is Evan gelist Billy Graham’s father-in law. But men like Dr. Taylor and Dr. Bell have been almost total ly ignored by the “liberal” press. These men, too, voice warnings about “hate.” But modern “liberalism” — in the press, in the clergy, and in pol itics — rejects the counsel of the Dr. Taylors and the Dr. Bells of our time. For th6y, you see, point to the errors and frailties of all — of liberals as well as conservatives. If one accepts the theory that there is a reaction for every ac tion, the turbulent dialogue of our day becomes somewhat more understandable. Those who have encouraged the disorders of the civil rights demonstrations en gage in piotis pretense as they protest the night-skies’ being reddened by flaming Ku Klux Klan crosses. What did they expect? Who will assign all jus tice to one, and none to the oth er? The liberals who today cry bout character assassination and hate, and “half-truths” have con venient memories. What, one might ask, will objective histor ians, have to say about the con duct of the liberals in the 1964 Presidential campaign? Who called whom a war monger? Who persuaded the American people that the election of one candidate would result in cer tain destruction of Social Se curity? Who, as a matter of plain fact, built such a climate of hate and distrust that Lyn don Johnson’s opponent was nev er able to obtain from the Am erican people a reasonable eval uation of his principles? For whatever it is worth, we too regret the present posture of America, for the nation is in deed hoisted on the petards of emotional and therefore often unreasonable conflicts of opinion. But the simple truth is the peo ple are- beginning to feel that they have nowhere to turn. They have learned that those who most often cry out about character assassination are themselves character assassins. The news media have too often traveled a one - way street in the discussions of America’s problems. The Congress has become, except in rare instanc es, a rubber - stamp for a mast er politician. Our courts appear to be more interested in protecting the guil ty than in protecting the inno cent. Moral codes are being re designed, working for a living has been declared old - fashion ed. Old truths are being dis carded in favor of what liberal ism chooses to call “new” truths. Yes, there is indeed character assassination going on in Amer ica. Our national character lies bleeding and dying in the gut ters of apathy and deceit. It may be that all of us deserve to go on trial for first-degree murder. Nursing Homes Limbering Up to Get Their Share of Medicare in 1967 The state’s licensed nursing homes will have to make only two minor administrative chang es to become eligible for partic ipation in thev new Medicare program, Dr. J. W. R. Norton, state health director, announc ed in Raleigh. “When Medicare becomes ef fective in nursing homes on January 1, 1987,” the health of ficial reported, “each home must appoint a ‘utilization re view committee’ and sign trans fer agreements with at least one hospital to qualify as a nursing home for Medicare patients.” Dr. Norton said licensed nurs ing homes in North Carolina al ready closely adhere to require ments of the new federal aid program, due to the high stan dard of licensing set by the State Board of Health. In this state, a nursing home must be under the supervision of a full - time registered nurse, with a registered or licensed practical nurse on duty at all times. In addition, all physical structures must conform to safety standards of the uniform state building codes. DISTIJJJED FROM GRAIN LAIRD'S PINT 4/5 QUART LAIRD AND COMPANY, SCOBEYVILIE, N. J.
