C., THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 1966 VOLUME xvm In Court Saturday Night Hurrahs are Smoothed Over in Flock of Warrants It was “Peace in the Valley” Friday as Judge Joe Becton poured judicial oil on some tro ubled Saturday night waters. Two charges of assault with a deadly weapon against Luther Faircloth issued over the signa tures of Lynwood Meadows and Bobby Stevens were withdrawn and the court costs were paid and a public drunkenness charge was nol prossed. In another much more involv ed flock of warrants Edward Johnson, Chess Roberts, Bobby Ray Roberts and James Robert Roberts were all found ndt guil ty of stealing a car in which they later got involved in an acci dent. It was derided that the car had been “borrowed” rather than stolen. But Chess Roberts, Bobby Rob erts, Edward Earl Johnson and James Allen Turnage had also been indicted in the same af fair for leaving the scene of an accident. All were duly found not guilty of this allegation. Chess and Bobby had also been indicted in the same hurrah for driving without a license and for this they were found guilty and each was ordered to pay a $10 fine or goit to jail for 30 days. They paid. In the only other non-traffic case Roy Lee Hall of Trenton paid $18 for public drunkenness. William Joseph Baagford of Camp Lejeune, Jeff David Dut ton of Bridgeton, Dondld Elridge Sumrell of Trenton, Melvin Lee Schippers of Havelodk, Ella Louise Stakely of Galloway, Ohio, Thomas Franklin JJohnson of Bridgeton and Roland Hum phrey Jr. of Oriental -all paid fines for speeding. Pvt. Paul Morgan At Fort Sill, Olda. Pvt. Paul E. Morgan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Morgan, Route 1, Box 312, PtiDocksville, completed a little John and Honest John missile crewman course at the Army Artillery and Missile Center, Foil; M.11, Okla., May 26. During the eight-week bourne Morgan reeled instruction in the loading, preparation and fir ing of these troop support mis siles. He entered the Army last Jan uary and completed basic train ing at Fort Jackson, S. C. The 19-year-old soldier is a 1965 graduate of Jones High School in Trenton. $3,086.72 Safe Job A "professional cracksman" punched open a safe in a fin ance company at 112 East Gor don Street over the weekend and walked away with $3,086.72. Entry to the establishment was made through a rear window and Kinston Police admit it was a very "neat Job", surely done by somebody who had done the same kind of work before. The missing funds included both checks end cash, and the com pany has net been able yet to furnish a breakdown to indicate j hew much was in each. Dianne Jarman is John M. Hargett Award Recipient Dianne Jarman of Jones Cen tral High School has been sel ected to receive the John M. Har gett Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was initiated in 1963 by friends of the late Rep. John M. Hargett is remembrance of Ms efforts in the field of edu cation. Mss Jarman is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Robert! Jarman of Pollocks ville. She has been a member of the Beta Club,1 Student Council secretary, Head! Cheerleader, Dramatics Club Treasurer, and a Science Fair District Keeps Incumbents for General Assembly Jones, Greene and Lenoir county nominated Guy Elliott and Joe Horton to represent the counties in the general assem bly. Kinstonian Elliott led the Saturday voting with 8562 votes, Horton was second with 6752 and Francis Sugg ran last with a very respectable 5298 votes. Both of the latter are from Snow Hill. The vote by counties was Jones County, Elliott 1733, Hor ton 1459, Sugg 1346; Greene County, Elliott 1485, Horton 2447, Sugg 1478; Lenoir County, Elliott 5344, Horton 2846 and Sugg 2474. Counterclaim Says Sheriff at Fault In Last Year Wreck A counterclaim was filed this week in Jones County Superior Court to the suit Sheriff Brown Yates filed some weeks ago for damages in a .truck-car wreck last year in Pollocksville. The New Hanover County de fendant alleges that the whole affair was the fault of Yates, whose car hit a fish truck that was stalled broadside on the highway without lights. The truck owner is asking $750 damages from Yates and Yates is asking $50;OOO for injuries he suffered in the crash. winner. She plans to enroll at Peace College this fall, where she will major in English. Yates, Henderson Swamp Opposition; • * Runoff Likely in Two Board Races Teresa Kime Gets Mittrey A. Courie Scholarship to ECC Teresa Kime of Jones Cen tral High School has been award ed the Mittrey Amon Courie Scholarship. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Kime of Pollocksville and plans to en ter East Carolina College this fall. This scholarship is given by the N. F. Courie Family of Kins ton in memory of their son. Three Jones Arrests In the past week Sheriff Brown Yates reports three arrests in the county. David Strayhorn of Pollocksville is accused of drunken driving and speeding, Silas Dillahunt Jr. of Pollocks ville route 1 is charged with be ing publicly drunk and Harold Hill has been charged with as sault with a deadly weapon in May 21st shooting of Eddie Kornegay, who is still under treatment for a .22 caliber pis tol wound in the stomach. Acres and Acres of Buildings Going Up on Heritage This was tha way things looked Tuesday as steelworkers laced acres and acres of lather for the first major surburban shopping center for Kinston. In away from More than 3,000 Jones Coun tians went to the polls Saturday and returned Incumbent Sheriff Brown Yates and Incumbent Court Clerk Walter Henderson to office with overwhelming ma jorities. Yates polished off two op ponents with 2,111 votes to a total of 880 for both his oppo nents. Mark Smith got 799 and E. D. Small got only 91 votes. Henderson had no trouble with Maysville School Principal Amos Taylor, coming up with a 3-to-l margin of victory as he snagged 2274 votes to Taylor’s 713. But in both the county com missioner and education board races the competition was much more keen; especially the com missioner tangle. The 15-way hassle over the five commissioner jobs resulted in no candidate receiving a plur ality, which means that any one of the next five candidates has the right to call for a second primary. They must make this decision by Monday of next week. In the Education Board race four of the 10 candidates did get the necessary plurality but the fifth man in the race didn’t quite reach the magic number, and faces the possibility of a runoff against the man in 6th place. In district competition Incum bent Solicitor Luther Hamilton Jr. of Morehead City led his op ponent Jim Cheatham of Pitt County 2050 to 791 in Jones County. Hamilton also won in the district. Incumbent Senator Everett Jordan led his competition Her bert Seymour 2098 to 832 in Jones County. Jordan carried the state in just about the same fashion.
