It’s no trick at all with "Nectarine ■Custard Pie.” Golden fresh nectarine slices, glistening with a lemon glaze, -swirl over a fluffy custard layer m a graham cracker crust for this cool-as-a-fan dessert. The nectarines are peeled in this instance. But fdr most recipes and for out*of-hand eating, don’t bother to remove the fetching red-and-gold skins. They are fuzzless, thin and ever so palatable. . , California orchards provide fine fruit fanciers with fresh nectarines all summer long. Whether you enjoy them as-is for .-snacks or in desserts, salads or meat sauces, you have in your grasp one of nature’s most delicious products. Nectarine Custard Pie 1 package (3 of 3% oz.) When the person calling about Tomatoes described the syrup-' toms, I was pretty sure that the trouble was caused by fusarium wilt —a fungus disease. I did ask some questions, though, to confirm my suspicion. Are they growing in full sun? Yes. What is the soil type? Clayey. Have ^you given the the plants reasonable good care? Yes. What variety did you plant? When he answered “Big Boy,” I was sure of the diagnosis be cause this variety is not resist ant to fusarium wilt. Fusarium wilt stunts the plant growth; leaves turn yellow, wilt wither and drop off, starting at .the base of the plant. Brown streaks occur inside the lower :stem and roots, and a brown •canker may girdle the stem near "the soil line. The most practical method for control of this disease by the home gardener is the planting at fusarium wilt resistant varie ties. There are many good ones —-Marion, Manalucie, Homestead strains and others. A more serious disease, bac terial wilt, also attacks tomatoes, hut we have no varieties resist ant to this trouble, which is soil borne. The symptoms are also •different from fusarium. Plants are stunted and wilt rapidly, usually beginning in the top portion of the plant. The plants die, usually without yellowing or f s spotting of the leaves. The inside of the stem shows a brownish discoloration arid is water soaked near the ground line. The apple trouble was caused by cedar rust. This is an alter native host fungus disease which spends the summer stage on the apple leaves and the winter stage as hard brown balls on the red cedar. '1 On the upper surface of the leaf the disease appears as yel low-orange to orange-red spots with black specks. On the un der side of the leaf the spots appear as creamy white to light orange, short fuzzy tendrils. Leaves that are heavily spot ted will drop prematurely, which stops fruit sizing and growth processes, generally. The most practical control for the home fruit garden is to re move the cedar trees, thus des troying one of the host plants. The other method is to pick off and destroy all cedar balls as soon as they form on the cedar trees.
