' > ■ '■ ' ■■*■■■■■ ■■■—■ • VOLUME xvm Trfenton WSCS Has Meet Last Week The Woman’s Society of Christian Service of the Trenton Methodist Church met on Wed nesday, September 14, at the church with 15 members pre sent. A most interesting pro gram entitled “Mission to Six Continents" was presented by Mrs. Fred Foscue, assisted by several members. Following the program, the members recited the purpose in lfflifon. Mrs. Sylvanus Mallard, president, welcomed everyone and asked for reports from the various officers and secretaries aw&aing. Several pertinent matters were, discussed atid decisions were' reached in several instances. Mrs. C. P. Banks, Secretary of Spiritual Life Cultivation, re minded members of up-coming events on the WSCS calendar. It was noted all important events of the WSCS year are listed in the 1966-lji67 year books. A discussion was held in re gards to members selling Christ mas cards or cloth calendars. However, it was decided that none would be sold. The meeting was closed with a prayer by the president. A social hour followed with Mrs. Hazel Turnage as "hostess. Homecoming Day Homecoming Day will be ob served Sunday at the Tuckahoe Christian Church near Comfort. Past, present and potential mem bers of the congregation are in vited to come out for the wor ship hour at 11 a.m. and to bring along a picnic basket for the dinner on the grounds which will be held at the close of the worship hour. Jones Health Royalty in Raleigh Annette Lowery and Jacky Eubanks, Jones County 4rH Health Queen and King were in Raleigh, Thursday Sept. 15 to attend the Rural Health Con ference held at the Sir Walter Hotel. At the close of the afternoon session the Queens and Kings of Health, their parents, and agents were introduced to the group by Dr. Edward L. Boyette, Chair man of the Committee on Com munity Health, Medical Society of the State of North Carolina. Mrs. W. W. Lowery accom panied the 4-Hers to Raleigh. Cadillac Padlocked Tuesday officers of the Le noir County Sheriff Department, acting under an order signed by Superior Court Judge Elbert Peele Jr. padlocked the premises Of the Cadillac Motel, south of Kinston, where a young Camp JLeieune Marine was killed last month. Solicitor Welter Britt in stituted the proceedings that led to the temporary closing of the establishment, and a formal hearing will be held October 17th to determine if t|m pad locking is tp be Continued. Britt also says the lease of the estab lishment, by its owner, Eunice Pigott, was a subterfuge aimed at thwarting the padlock pro Trenton Community Development Club Met Last Week The Trenton Community De velopment Club held its regular meeting at the Extension Build ing in Trenton last week. Remarks of encouragement was given by President Johnnie Brown. He stated that he was proud of the cooperative com munity spirit that had been shown by the group this year. He encouraged them to continue to work to help solve their many community problems. It was further stated that, “There is no limit to what a community can do — if it wants to.” Several members gave some of the accomplishments that had been made during the year. The meeting was climaxed with a presentation by Farm Agent Fletcher Barber, who showed slides on, “People Are Our Greatest Resources.” Barber concluded by remind ing the group that “There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t mind who gets the credit.” Nine Cases Cleared In Recorder's Court Trial before Judge Joe Bec ton of pleas of guilty to Clerk Walter Henderson cleared nine cases from the docket of Jones County Recorder’s Court in the past week. In the only non-traffic case Wilbur Metts of Trenton route 2 paid $17 for being drunk in a public place. Kenneth Ted Goodson of Jack sonville route 3 and George Mar vin Spence of Trenton route 1 each paid $13 for not having had their cars inspected. Samuel Earl Rouse of Kins ton route 4, Jerry Gurganus of New Bern route 3, Efthimios Mariakakis of Chapel Hill and John Frank Kominarek of Camp Lejeune all paid off for speed ing and a speeding charge against Hergert Strayer of Camp Lejeune was noli prossed. Lenzor Pharoah West of Pol locksville route 1 paid $13 for following too closely. Audit Finds Clerk's Records in Balance The annual audit of the office of Jones County Clerk of Court Walter Henderson by Kinston Accountant Simon Sitterson Jr. has found all accounts in proper condition. The audit revealed a cash bal ance at the beginning of the past fiscal year of $1899.86, receipts during the year totalling $52, 928.73, making available $53, 158.39 for distribution. During the year proper distri bution was shown for 53,158.39, leaving at year-end a balance of $1670.20. The account of recorder’s court showed a beginning bal ance of $252.00, collections dur ing the year of $24,267.70 and distribution of $24,500.20, leav ing a year-end balance of $19.50. The audit further revealed that the clerk held under de posit $26,139.45 for minors and incompetents. This trust ac count was found to be $11,209.57 on deposit with the First Citi zens Bank, $5,010.37 with the First National Bank ond $9, 919.51 with Branch Banking and Trust Company. Patricia Borden Having Art Exhibit This Week at East Carolina College An art exhibit by East Caro lina College student Patricia Borden of Kinston is open to the public this week at the East Carolina College. Mrs. Borden’s show is on view in the Kate Lewis Gallery on the third floor of Rawl Building. It closes Saturday, Sept. 24. It contains chiefly paintings and examples of the artist’s work in interior design, but will also have some sculpture, crafts and ceramics. Mrs. Borden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Crawford of Kins ton,, is a graduate of Grainger High School. She attended Salem College and University of North Caro lina (Chapel Hill) and received a certificate from the New York School of Interior Design (1963) before enrolling in the ECC School of Art in 1964. East Carolina has awarded her a graduate assistantship to con tinue her studies in art here af ter she receives her BS degree in art education. APPEALS JAIL TERM Marvin Elwood Murphy of Mt. Olive route 1 appealed to superior court last week when he drew four months in prison in recorder’s court for driving while his license was revoked. MARINE BADLY HURT Camp Lejeune Marine Jeffrey Trelfa suffered serious injuries early Sunday morning as he pushed his out-of-gas car on the US 70 bypass near its intersec tion with NC 11. Another Ma rine, tarry Allen Moyer, was driver of the car that hit Trelfa. Black Swamp Maa Bound Over, Charged With Shotgun Murder ef Wife Last Week Twenty six year-old Curtis Turner of the Black Swamp sec tion east of Maysville is held without _ privilege of bond, charged' with murdering his wife, Zella .Mae, last Thursday night. After a preliminary hearing before Recorder’s Court Judge Joe Becton Tuesday probable cause of Turner’s guilt was found. Deputy Sheriff Dan Killings worth said the shooting took place in the trailer home of the couple at about Midnight and that she died instantly when the full blast from a 12 gauge shot gun hit her at close range in the face just about at the point Suit Filed Seeking Collect 1965 Debt In Jones County Superior Court during the past week one civil action has been filed ac cording to Clerk Walter Hender son,, In this action F. Rogers Pol lock seeks to collect $908.93 with interest from October 14, 1965 from C. D. Hodges and C. D. Hodges Jr. of her right cheek bone. Turner insists that the shoot ing was an accident, and that he was messing with the gun when it went off accidentally. Killingsworth said there was evidence that tended to indi cate that the shooting was no accident. Other arrests in the past week include that of Ed. Jones Jr. of Maysville who was charged with drunken driving and James Ed ward White of Trenton route 1 who was 'also charged with drunken driving. Firemen's Day The Wyse Fork Volunteer Fire Department is holding its an nual "Firemen's Day" on Satur day of this week. Barbecue and fried chicken plates will be sold at the fire department building from 10:30 in the morning un til 7:30 in the evening. Door prizes will also be given a way during the day. All friends of the department are urged to come by and eat one of both meals Saturday to help raise operating funds for the depart ment. Poultry Show and Sale Tuesday Offers 144 High Quality Layers at Auction On hundred and forty four laying hens will be sold at auc tion at the Lenoir County Live stock Building, located 2% miles west ot Kinston on the Pink Hill Highway, at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 27. Twelve hundred Harco Red chicks, all N.C.U.S. Pullorum clean chicks of the certified grade, were purchased and plac ed with 21 Lenoir County 4-H Club boys and girls during March. The pullets have been vaccinated with fowl pox vac cine. The poultry chain is sponsored annually by a private founda tion in cooperation with the Ex tension Service. This year the foundation will award prize money to the club members having done the best job. Re ceipts from the sale are to be used to purchase more chicks for other club members for an other year. The purpose of the poultry chain is to teach rural boys and girls profitable poultry produc tion through supervised practi ces. 4-H’ers showing pullets in the sale Tuesday are as follows: Two Wrecks in Two Minutes Charged to Lynwood Gooding Friday night Lynwood Earl Gooding of Kinston route 4 was trying to get out of Kinston, but he had some difficulty: Two wrecks in two minutes. First on South Queen Street he rammed the rear of a car driven by Jimmy Turner of Bel mont Trailer park, knocking $70 worth of dents in it, and Good ing just kept on going. At the intersection of US 70 and US 258 just across the river Gooding plowed into a car driv en by Alex Melvin of Elm City route 2, injuring Melvin and four other passengers in the Mel vin car and making total wrecks of both cars involved. Gooding was charged with hit and run driving, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and speeding. He was not hurt in either of the wrecks. n'sdaxw! Albert Feaster of 414 Shine Street is under $1500 bond In the Kinston city jail, charged with assault with a deadly wea pon with intent to kill. Police say Feaster went to the home of Hilliard Brooks at 504 Thomp son Street at about 7 Saturday night, knocked Brooks down and stomped h i m brutally. Brooks, on Wednesday, was still listed as "extremely critical" at Lenoir Memorial Hospital, suf fering from multiple internal in juries, largely in the chest area. Feaster was free on appeal bond From conviction last Thursday of assaulting another person with a deadly weapon, for which he was given eight months in pri son. 'Tired and Sleepy' Last Thursday morning Dan 5. Williams of 2201 Briarfield Road got "tired and sleepy7' north of Kinston and wandered into the home of Edward Har rell, where he was found sprawl ad asleep on a bed. He was charged with being drunk and trespassing. Later in the day he jot a bit closer to home, but still missed and got in another 'wrong bed" in the Greenmeade Section, where he was again sroused and for the second time charged with public drunken ness and trespassing. SHOPLIFTING SENTENCE Willie Miller of 909 Reed Street was given six months in prison last week after being found guilty of shoplifting in recSrder’s court. ATJ. - s'”,
