Master Sergeant McLeland Jones Named Outstanding Non Commissioned Officer for Year at Goodfelfow AFB Air Force Master Sergeant Mc Leland Jones, brother of Mrs. Wilbur E. Mozingo of 401 Green meade Drive, Kinston, N. C., has been selected Outstanding Non commissioned Officer of the Year at Goodfellow AFB, Tex. Sergeant Jones, a personnel technician with the 6940th Sup port Group, also was a competi tor with nominees from other bases for the honor of repre senting the U. S. Air Force Se curity Service as its Outstanding Airman of the Year at the March 14-17 Air Force Association Con vention in San Francisco. He was selected as Goodfel low’s Top NCO for his excep tional military achievements and his support of military and civic, religious and community pro jects during the past year. The sergeant’s superior pro fessional knowledge and leader^ ship ability are credited with producing an outstanding data control function within the con solidated base personnel office (CBPO). Under his supervision, his unit had the lowest error rate within the Security Serv ice command. During the conversion from manuel to a mechanized person nel program, Sergeant Jones was assigned the task of training all CBPO personnel in the new per- j sonnel data system. By conduct ing various workshops, lectures, and section .and individual on job-training programs, he suc cessfully accomplished this as signment. ■ In July 1966 after assuming duties as-assistant chief of data control, he reorganized the sec tion, obtaining maximum use of space, equipment and manpow er. The sergeant, an active parti cipant in the base chapel pro gram, was recently elected presi dent of the Protestant Men of the Chapel organization. He also is active in the Parent Teacher Association of both an elementary and a junior high school in San Angelo, Tex. Sergeant Jones, a veteran of more than 20 years military service, holds the Air Force Commendation Medal for super ior duty performance during his previous assignment at Key West, Fla. He is a graduate of Alex H. White High School in Pollocks ville, and is attending Howard Payne College extension branch at Goodfellow through an Air Force education program. Sergeant Jones is married to the former Mary E. Bradley. Pvt. Tommy Dail Given Recognition Private Thomas E. Dail, 23, whose mother, Mrs. Catherine R. Dail, lives at 1313 Holman St., Kinston, was chosen his basic combat training company’s out standing trainee February 10 at Ft. Bragg, N. C. Dail was selected by his in structors for demonstrating ex ceptional ability and initiative in classroom and field instruction throughout his eight weeks of training. PFC Gerald Bright On Big Push in Vietnam Operation Private First Class Gerald Bright, 20, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mack S. Bright, and wife, Linda, live on Route 1, Maysville, is participating in “Operation Junction City,” the largest military operation to date in Vietnam. The operation was launched on the theory that national Viet Cong political and military head quarters might be located in the area along the Cambodian bor der. The finding of the largest enemy encampments in the war tend to support the theory. Meeting little VC resistance, the operation has been success ful in the confiscation of large quantities of food and arms. Pvt. Bright is a machine gun ner in Troop K, 3rd Squadron of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regi ment. Richard Avery Gets Air Force Promotion Richard G. Avery, son of Mr. and Mrs. James K. Avery of Rt. Pvt. Cyrus Batts af Fort Gordon, Ga. Private Cyrus A. Batts, 22, 1, Trenton has been promoted to airman second class in the Air Force. Airman Avery is an automo tive repairman at Clintbn-Sher man AFB, Okla. He is a mem ber of the Strategic Air Com mand, which maintains Ameri ca’s constantly alert force of in tercontinental missiles and jet bombers. son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Batts of Route 1, Pollocksville, com pleted a nine-week communica tions center specialist course at the Army Southeastern Signal School, Ft. Gordon, Ga., March 10. Batts was trained to operate teletype sets and other com munications equipment. His wife, Ann, lives on Jones St., in Trenton.
