C., THURSDAY, MAY 4, 1967 VOLUME xvm ' Trenton Firemen Fight Hard Tuesday to Save Homes Tuesday afternoon somebody in the Friendship Church neigh borhood got careless with fire and, fanned by a gusty breeze the fire: spread rapidly across te'r ■ about, a huiidred-acre tract of woods to threaten a dozen homes on the Trenton-Cove City road. Car Cbmes Calling, but Gets to Wrong Door 1 •• Unless one has “enjoyed” the | thrill of a roller-coaster it is I - not . possible to explain the sud den dismay that comes from piloting a car from which the brakes have suddenly depart ed. Mrs. Amanda Julian of 1703 West New Bern Road earned her pilot wings, with distinc tion at 5:13 Monday afternoon when this fete befell her as she drove south on Heritage Street. Carefully piloting the brakeless family flivver between two parked cars, Mrs. Julian used a silent parking meter to home in on and then used it for a hrake-atd and eased to a gen tle halt jusi inches away from the screen door at Lovick’s Cafe. Police showed their apprecia tion of Mrs. Julian’s skill by Jones County Superior Court Clerk Walter Henderson reports receiving three civil actions in bis office during the past week; two for divorce and die third seeking to collect a debt. Addle Johnson Chapman seeks alleging their marriage on July 23, 1960 and their separation in March of 1964. John F. Murphy seeks divorce from Barbara J. Murphy, alleg ing their marriage on April 7, 1962 and their separation on ■March 29, 1966, and Murphy further asks the court to fix a reasonable amount of support for. him to pay for the two child ren born to the marriage,, who are living with their mother. In the debt action J. C. West . commending her, rather than giving the usual traffic cita tion. Damage was no more than $125 ... $25 to her car and $100 to the poor parking meter. The only slip in die whole man euver was that Mrs. Julian landed at the wrong door, since the doorway shown here has a small, polite sign which reads: “Come In Other Door”. Michael Mallard Is Classroom Teacher President in County Michael S. Mallard of Tren ton, who teaches at Maysville Elementary School, was install ed recently as President of the Jones County Classroom Teach ers Association. Other officers installed were: Vice President Mrs. Johnise Gray and Secre tary-Treasurer Mrs. Laura White. Presiding at the meeting at Maysville School Wednesday was Earl Enzor, who comment ed on the recent state C.T.A. meeting in Asheville, at which he was a delegate. Tiny Ham mond and Myrtle Brock spoke on current C.T.A. issues. _ The devotional was presented by Mrs. Evelyn D. Wright and the Maysville Elementary School Glee Club. Mrs. Wright read “The Creation” from Gen esis and selections about the month of April. The Glee Club sang “God Bless America” and “The Spacious Firmament.” Refreshments were served the teachers on arrival by Mrs. H. C. Bell, chairman, and other Maysville School Teachers. Jr. seeks to collect $134.88 from C, D. Hodges and C. D. Hodges Jr., due since January 1, 1865. ^ .. . ...^ I Comnrissoners Have Susy Times in May Session fighting War on Poverty Monday the Jones County Board of Commissioners spent a busy session, largely concern ed with doing their bit to fight the war on poverty. First off the board amended the minutes of a special meet ing held in April by adding a paragraph to an ordinance which says, “From and after April 7,1967 said planning board shall consist of seven members. The four additional members shall be J. W. Creagh Jr., Mau rice Hill, Lela Pollock and Iona Collier, who are hereby ap pointed for a term of one year.” Then the board appointed 14 people to an Advisory Commit tee for the Economic Develop ment District, including Robert H. Davenport, Logan Green, Billy Wiggins, Jeanette Lowery, J. J. Chadwick, Alva B. Howard, Annie Hargett, F. M. Peed Jr., F. T. Bender, C. W. Lancaster, Robert Mattocks, Grace Pollock and Myrtle Brock. The board also voted to par ticipate in the Economic De velopment District under the North Carolina Planning Task Force and named J. W. Creagh Jr., Lela Pollock and Iona Col lier to represent Jones County on the district committee. In other areas the board en dorsed expansion of the James Sprint Institute at Kenansville. The board also agreed to pay $1200 per year as the county’s part on the next assistant farm agent hired. It was also agreed to pay Annie Mallard for filling out crop reports, which will be re imbursed by the state. And of importance to those working in the court house the board voted to hire a consul tant engineer to plan a central heating and air-conditioning sys tem for the court house. The board also moved to help move along the overall county drainage effort by voting to hire someone to secure easements and right of ways for cleaning out Trent River from Trenton to the Craven County line and pass ed an ordinance extending the right of eminent domain to this work, when it is needed. Court Cost Levied Against Man Who Violated Law With $200 Minimum Fine In Jones County Recorder’s Court last Friday Roger Dail Burkett of Dover route 2 plead ed guilty to driving while his driving license was revoked, a violation for which the law pre scribes a minimum fine of 5200. Judge Joe Becton entered a “prayer for judgment” in the case and ordered Burkett to pay the court costs. Leslie Eugene West of Camp Le-jeune paid $119 for drunken driving, Julius Locklear Jr. of Maysville paid $119 for drunk en driving. George Levi Roberts of Tren ton route 1 was given a 6-month suspended jail term for beating his wife. Under the suspension he is to pay a $10 fine, not drink any alcoholic beverage, not beat his wife and remain on proba tion for two years. Ernest Ray Foy of New Bern paid $26 for driving without a license and Willie Murrell of Trenton route 2 paid $16 for permitting an unlicensed person to drive. The plaintiff withdrew a non suppori warrant against Tom Linwood Bryant of Trenton route 1 and paid the court costs. And in a simple assault charge against Haywood Holt of Pollpcksville the same thing happened. .., Speeding tickets were paid off by George Lee Rasberry of Trenton route 2, Arthur J. Has peslaugh and Paul Dennis Clark of Camp Lejeune, James Taylor of Montgomery, N. Y. and Wil lie Austin Smith of Pollocks ville paid $13 for driving an im properly equipped car. THREE JONES ARRESTS During the past week Jones County Sheriff Brown Yates reports booking three people at the county jail. Leslie Eugene West of Camp Lejeune and Alon za J. Mills of Trenton route 2 were charged with drunken driving and Christine Godley of Maysville was charged with public drunkenness. Strawberry Field Meeting Next Week Farmers Urged See Work Being Done A strawberry field meeting will be conducted for Jones County farmers on May 10th. This is a good opportunity for farmers to observe strawberry production practices that have been conducted on the farm of Rev. A. G. Cheston of Route 2, Trenton. Some growers are netting from $1200 to $2000 per acre. “I am sure this would be of benefit to many small farmers,” says, Fletcher Barber, Agricul tural Extension Agent for Jones County. The resources which are need ed in strawberry production are available. Farmers needing as sistance to establish a straw berry project, may contact their farm agent office to see if they meet the eligibility require ments. All farmers, businessmen and others interested in attending are asked to meet at the Coun ty Agricultural Building in Tren ton by 9:45 a.m. on May 10. The meeting is planned for ap proximately two hours. Joe F. Brooks, Horticulture Specialist from State Univer sity will be present to give first hand information on proper harvesting, grading and packag ing strawberries for marketing. Curtis Haddock Is Finalist in State Bricklaying Tests Curtis Haddock of Jones High School took 8th place honors Saturday in Raleigh at a stare bricklaying contest, which in cluded 40 of the top students among 3500 enrolled in this class across the state. This is the fourth trophy for outstanding work in this field won by Jones High Students this month. Mother To Prison Last week An^ Mitchell of 209 Broadway Street was given one year in prison for neglect ing her nine minor children and contributing to their delinquen cy by permitting them to wan der about, shoplifting and steal ing from neighbors and by not keeping the school-aged child ren in school.
