Staking and pruning tomat<
plants will result in higher quali
ty fruit, cleaner fruit and har
vesting will be easier.
Select a suitable stake about
five feet long and about on*
inch square. Sharpen one enc
and drive in the ground secur*
— usually about six inches t*
one foot. Set the stake abou
four inches from the plant.
Make the first tie abou
twelve inches from the base o:
the plant and then tie at twelve
inch intervals as the plant grows
For tying I like cloth strips tori
from an old sheet or similar ma
terial. Soft, heavy cotton string
may also be used. Place the strij
(or string) around the stem o
the plant, cross once and tie se
curely to the stake.
Pruning is simple and shoul*
be done to prevent excessiv*
suckering. As the tender shoot
appear in the axils of the leaves
pinch them out. This takes ver
little time and will improve botl
the appearance and performanci
of the plant.
To control the more commoi
diseases, spray with Manzate I
(Maneb 80 per cent) at regula:
intervals, following the manu
facturers’ instructions. For in
sect control, use either Sevu
or Malathion according to thi
manufacturers’ recommenda
tions ....
That “sticky stuff’ is comini
down again. You may find it 01
your car, picnic table and lawi
chairs. Don’t blame the tree
but rather aphids (plant lice]
scale insects and white flie
which are sucking juices fron
the leaves and stems.
As these plant juices are in
gested and pass through th
bodies of the insects, a “honej
dew” is excreted. Aside fron
the sticky mess which falls fron
the trees, the gloss on your ca
may be destroyed. Prolongei
i heavy doses may even damage
the paint.
What can be done? Picnic
tables and lawn chairs may be
covered with any simple cover
for protection when not in use.
Cars should be kept in the ga
rage or covered with plastic.
These sucking insects can be
controlled by following a plan
ned spray program. However,
