1968 Tobacco Disease
Control Begins Now
It may seem premature to be
thinking about the 1908 tobacco
crop at this date, but it’s the
ideal time to begin planning how
to avoid losses to plant diseases
next year.
“Growers who have disease
symptoms showing up in their
fields now can count on having
more trouble in the future un
less they take some kind of pre
ventive measures,” warns Fur
ney Todd, extension plant patho
logist at North Carolina State
University.
“The first step in a disease
control program is to determine
what kinds of diseases are pre
sent on the farm,” he adds. “Af
ter the trouble is diagnosed, a
grower can begin to take ac
tion.”
Todd estimates that plant dis
eases are a 25 miHio& dollar
headache for North Carolina to
bacco producers. Black shank,
Granville wilt, nematodes, brown
spot, black root rot, mosiac and
others take huge chunks out of
grower profits every year.
