Rockets Down James Kenan 12-0 Last; Host to Southern Wayne Friday Night Neither team scored in the first half Friday night but the Jones Central Rockets came on to lake over and win the game •in the last half as they downed James Kenan 12-0. A James Kenan fumble on their own 42 yard line set the stage for the Rocket’s first score. Quarteihack Rick Franck had a 13-yard run during the drive. The Rockets got going again in the fourth quarter and put to gether a 48-yard march that was capped by Dalton Ange’s two yard plunge. Neither Rocket ex tra point attempt was success full. The Tigers of James Kenan threatened to score only once in the game and that was in the closing minutes of play when they penetrated the Rocket de fense to the 27-yard line. Blue Devils Show Charity No Charity; Rip Over The m39-0 in Easy Victory The Jones High Blue Devils showed no mercy Friday night as they trounced Charity High of Rose HiH 39-0 while turning on the power both offensively and defensively. Carson Ward, who had three touchdowns for the night, scor ed the first Blue Devil touch donyn from 13 yards out after Jams Cheston recovered a Chari ty fumble. Minutes later, Ward was in the end zone again as he rolled 67 yards down the side lines after taking a pitchout. Kenny Brown returned a pass interception 19 yards in the third quarter for another Blue IDevil touchdown. Brown had three interceptions for the night. A 67-yard pass play from quarterback Kenny Brown to flanker Robert DeVaughn scor ed still another touchdown, and the final two tallies were the re sult of pass interceptions, one by and the other by Brown for 18 Thurman Boomer for 70 yards, yards. The Blue Devils pilfered nine Charity passes as they found Rose Hill pass offense easy pick ings. James Cheston and Kenny Brown had three interceptions each. Jones High’s total offense was 451 yards, compared to 64 for Charity. Douglas Hill had 14 tackles for the' rockets defense and Leon Whaley had 12. Larry Smith and Larry Mallard also stood out on defense. The Rocket record presently stands at three wins against one loss and no ties. Wilcox one lot 8 YEAR OLD -i««4T BOURBON IF ECU Makes Biggest Gains Ever In Faculty - Building By Henry Howard East Carolina University has managed this year to make its greatest gains ever in the fierce faculty recruitment tug-of-war that goes on constantly through out the world of higher educa tion. As the new school year be gan this month, the university had a faculty roll of 558. That is an even 100 more than last in Beaver Creek Township. From James T. and Lillian H. But the figures of which the university’s academic big game hunters are proudest show quali ty rather than quantity of the faculty build-up. By competing more effective ly than ever before in the pro fessor market, East Carolina raised its percentage vi faculty members with PhD’s and other terminal degrees from 51 to 60. According to Dr. Robert W. Williams Jr., dean of academic affairs, the 9-point gain is “far and away the best we’ve ever been able to do in a year.” The percentage has hovered around 50 for several years. Some campus spokesmen have doubts that any campus in North Carolina( and perhaps few in the entire nation, can equal East Carolina’s percentage gain in terminal degree ratio. President Leo Jenkins reflects the resources which made the successful faculty-hunt possible: “We are greatly indebted to the 1967 General Assembly for the encouragement and foresight ex tended to us through increased appropriations.” Fresh Cooked Barbecue Daily!
