C., THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 1966 VOLUME XIX Jones County Commissioners Have'Busy Session as Work on New Year Begins in First Session Tuesday The Jones County Board of Commissioners met Tuesday, January 2 in its first meeting of the new year and voted to open bids for a Courtroom painting contract in a continua tion of the general Courthouse renovation plan that is already in progress. ' v ready in progress. The Commissioners also de cided to paint all of the offices in the Agriculture building. Much of this work has already been completed and the remain der is to be done as Sbon as possible. A total of $431 has been spent so far in repairs and improvements of the Agri culture building and the Board agreed that the rest of the work can be paid for without going over the $500 ceiling that had been set previouly. j Tax Collector Julian Waller ] gave his annual report to the' Board and showed a total of. taxes, insolvents, and lands sales]; for $16,628.10. He was given’ ah 1a Anwonf « ■541 GA Relatively Quiet in Jones During Holiday Period The Jones County Sheriff’s Department reports the follow ing arrests during the recent Christmas and New Year’s holi day period: John Haywood Davis of Pollocksville was charged by Highway Patrolman C. W. Oak ley with speeding 100 miles per hour. Loyal Franklin of Pollocks ville was picked up by Patrol man Oakley for driving under the influence and ftas also charg ed with hit-and-run driving. Melvin Sharp of Maysville, was arrested by Constable Royal E. Provost and Deputy Sheriff Milton Arthur for destroying personal property. Sharp was sent to Cherry Hospital in Golds boro on an emergency comitt Clerk Issues Civil Judgment in Jones Superior Court Three civil case judgments have been handed down already in the new year by Clerk of Su perior Court Walter Henderson. Two of the judgments were by default and the third resulted in a non-suit. First Citizen’s Bank and Trust Company of Maysville was a warded $2,400 plus interest from October 14, 1965, from Robert Nobles and wife for a breech of contract to repay a loan. Thieves Hit Trenton Hardware Store Thursday; Take Rifle, Money, Records a tmet or tmeves broke into the Trenton Hardwire Store owned by Fred Foscue last Thursday night by neatly remov ing a large glass window in the front of Hie building. Foscue said that a rifle worth about $50 and some other merchandise, and about $3 in petty cash were taken along with a box containing the ac counts receivable files. Without the files, Foscue said, he had no record of debts owed him. When asked if he thought the files were taken purposely, espe cially since the robbery occur red just before the annual year end auditing of the books, Fos cue said, “No, the box that the files were in looked a lot like a Nobles were also ordered to pay the court costs of the action. Jones County has Seven Deaths in '67 On Its Highways Last year Jones County had seven people killed in traffic accidents and paradoxically, only one of the seven killed was a Jones Countian. Jones County’s first fatality of the year came on January 16th on Highway NC 41 between Trenton and Comfort at about 6:30 a.m. when Lacy Scott of Landis was killed in a one-car accident. The second victim of the year in Jones County was Joseph C. Brooks of Camp Lejeune, who. was killed at 5:30 a.m. Febru ary 23rd on US 17 about four miles north of Pollocksville. On February 26th James M. Grady of Cove City was killed in a one-car wreck at about 9 p.m. six miles south of Pollocks collecting mistake involving' Abram Simmons and Aaron j Simmons. license Examiner Charles May of the State Highway Patrol was allocated a room in the basement of the Courthouse. _County-librarian Mrs. Mar^ Thomas and Mrs. Alta Ktronce ■of the Branch and Trust Com pany of Trenton appeared be fore the Board and discussed with them the possibility of re locating the Trenton library from its present location to the old Post Office building which is for Tent. Nothing was decided definitely except that the Lib rary Hoard should get together with the Town Board and dis cuss the procurement of funds after which Mrs. Thomas would report back to the Commission ers. ABC Board member Ray Har rison gave his report and in dicated that the retained earn ings for the Jones County ABC Board for the period from July 1 to September 30, 1967, were $97,88729. Harrison said that the ABC Board would probably turn ov er about $30,000 to the County this year as opposed to the usual $25,000 since the reserve fund has been built up to a stable level. The Board of Commissioners reappointed Logan Green to a three-year term on the Jones, County ABC Board. * The Commissioners authorized an appropriation for expenses to sfnd a representative of the Sheriffs Department to the next school to learn how to operate the newly acquired breathalyzer. Holidays for County employ ees for the new yeg* were set for the same days as last year: East er Monday, Memorial Day, In-, dependence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, and two days for Thanksgiving. IN AND OUT AND IN Hubert Hitt of 413 Caswell Street completed serving a 00 day jail term Saturday after noon at the city jail. Saturday night he was hack in his old room, charged with assault upon i female, resisting arreqt and as ■Jt ‘ttjfijtfgfctst$ : - Lenoir County's First Fatality of 1968 Conies Tuesday his battered wreckage is the car in which 26 year-old Keith Ted Garris of Ayden route 2 met his death at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, four miles south of Kinston on Highway US 258. Highway Patrolinan J. S. Irving says Garris w«s driving northwardly, when his car went ■ar, out of control and skidded broadside into the path of a southbound car driven by Camp Lejeune Marine CpI. John C. Culick, who was seriously injured in the crash. Both were riding alone and both cars were classi fied total losses by Patrolman Irving. I I V n t ville on US 17. February, by far the deadliest month of the year for Jones County, also brought the only twin fatality of the year, and it came on the 27th about two miles south of Pollocksville on US 17, when Ronald Joseph Ca piqotto of Camp Lejeune was killed instantly and Arthur May nard Coston of Onslow County suffered injuries from which he died several days later. On September 5th Lewis Earl White of Dover became the sixth Jones fatality of the year on a rural paved road near Trenton. The only Jones Countian to lose his life in the county in a wreck during the year was David Linwood Cox of Trenton route 1, who died instantly on the night of November 26th in a wreck on a rural paved road near Trenton. Greene County has Six Auto Deaths in '67 in Three Wrecks Greene County didn’t have but three fatal auto accidents in 1967 but six people died in them. Greene had only one fatal acci dent until November, with John Stuart Murphy being hit by a car as he lay drunk on a rural paved road near Snow Hill on the night of April 1st. On November 6th Ronald Rob inson of Lenoir County was killed in a one-car wreck seven miles west of Snow Hill. And on the night of Novem ber 11th four young people were killed on US 13 west of Snow Hill when their car went out of control at a very high rate of speed. The dead in that one-car wreck included Claudius Cor bett of Fountain, Diane Mozin =o, Stephen Hardison and Karen Barbour, all of Farmville. THREE INDICTED Frederick Lee Cobb, James Lee Murphy; and Larry Darnell Loftin, all of Kinston route 5 frere arrested Monday in Wil nington and returned to Kinston to face auto theft charges.
