ON MISLEADING * SCHOOL CHILDREN \JOHN J. SYNOi Anyone with a heart and an understanding of the facts sur rounding “race” can do no less than feel great compassion for the scurrilous treatment our young people are receiving at the hands of race agitators. I write of those vicious people who tell school children there are no material differences be tween races and that whatever “apparent” differences there are were created through the un warranted prejudice of those, the parents, who acknowledge the differences to be real and significant. lOonsider this incident: The student council of Senn High School, Washington, D.C., recently gave over a day to demonstrating that a belief in race differences is ridiculous. To that end the students scrawled labels — Superior and Inferior — on drinking fountains and washrooms. The “superior” race, according to the rules of this ma cabre game, consisted of those who wore glasses. Such “superi ors” were allowed to use only those facilities so labeled; the “inferiors” were allowed to use only those facilities labeled “in ferior”. The program, the student council explained, was intended to provide “a greater number of students with a more practical and personal knowledge of the ridiculousness of discrimina tion.” Did it? BEAR IN MIND, no adults showed in this experiment in living. Ostensibly, it was con ceived and executed by the teen agers. That may be, but one must ask where these adoles cents got their concept of what is and what is not ridiculous. Moreover, one would like to believe that these people — the adults teaching the children — are intellectually honest, that what they want to impress upon the youngsters is not so much the validity of differing racial theories as the truth. So be lievmg as they do that there are no material reasons why the races should be educated separ ately, they inspire such perfor mances as this. But if they be lieved to the contrary, that there are material race differences, they would have used the day to demonstrate the differences, jusl as they did in fact use it to de monstrate the opposite. One would like to make that assump tion, that our pedagogues, first, are truth seekers. ARE THEY? Well, let’s see. I offer this challenge: Have the students of Wash ington’s Senn High School select six drinking fountains; shut oft all others. Give each of these six fountains a distinct designa tion, so, Very Superior;Superior; High Average; Low Average Borderline; and Defective. Have these designations refer to the intellectual capability of indivi dual students. Then, station a “guard” at each fountain with orders to let none drink at his particular fountain except those who carrying a card identifying the thirsty student as intellect ually qualified to drink at that particular spot. • For each Negro qualified tc drink at the Very Superior foun tain, there would be 44 Whites so qualified. • For each Negro qualified tc drink at the Superior fountain, there would be 27 Whites. • For each Negro qualified tc drink at the High Average foun tain, thre would be 26 Whites. • For each White qualified to drink at the Low Average foun tain, there would be 26 Whites, es. • For each White qualified to drink at the Borderline fountain, there would be five Negroes. • For each White qualified tc drink at the Defective fountain, Always Heed The Sign!
