Two Camp Lejevne Marinos Become
Lenoir County's 4th and 5th Ante
Accident Victims in '68 Sunday_
At 4 Sunday afternoon a pair of
Camp Lejuene Marines were in
stantly killed six miles south of
Kinston in a head on crash with
a northbound Trailways bus.
The small sports car driven by
Marine Bobby Ewing crossed in
to the wrong lane and struck
the bus driven by Ronnie Earl
Howard of Jacksonville, who
had pulled the bus almost all
the way off the highway onto the
shoulder of the road.
Violetta Rogers of Kansas City,
Mo., the other Marine, and
Ewing were both pinned in the
crumpled wreckage of Ewing’s
car and some time was required
to get their bodies out.
Howard said it appeared to
him that Ewing had fallen to
sleep at the wheel of 'his car.
Several passengers on the bus
were given emergency treatment
in Lenoir Memorial Hospital for
minor injuries.
Patrolman Marvin Moore said
the Marine’s car was a total
loss and damage to the bus was
estimated at about $3500.
These were the 4th and 5th
highway fatalities of 1968 in
Lenoir County.
