ELECTRONIC WEATHERMEN electronic wegtnermen, super . computers charting the vast forces of the atmosphere, are quietly revo lutionizing weather forecasting. In less than 20 yean, computers have changed the entire process of learning ahead whether you can ex pect the sun to shine or the rein to pour. Soon, you will have as much faith in a computer-based two week forecast as you now do in a two day forecast. This means that vacationers will be able to pack clothes two weeks ahead with better certainty of being prepared for the right weather. Fanners will plant and reap their crops aided by more reliable com puterized forecasts. .Unexpected weather disasters, already "a rarity because of modem weather diag nosis. will be almost unheard of. These comput ers forecast ahead on the basis of ingenious, highly complex mathe matical formulas about the interac tions of the mighty forces involved in the weather. Without such com puters, thousands of mathemati cians would have to work out the solutions in many years of work. Today, experiment are continu ing on two UNIVAC 1108’s which execute about 100,000,000,000 in structions in producing a 24-hour forecast in some 14 hours of high speed computing. June 3,1968. ' ■■ ■ The research has already paid some impressive dividends. In one case, a series of three storms formed and developed successively at about four day intervals off the coast of Texas and moved into the eastern third of the United States during a twelve day period. The computers forecast the birth and development of each of these storms with almost uncanny accuracy. In the future, you will see even more startling advances. An ad vanced mathematical model, in cluding extremely complex inter actions of the air and sea, is now well along in development. A later version of this model is expected to produce two week forecasts which will be as accurate as present two day forecasts. Note the smooth transition from interior to exterior space. High windows, part of an Ingenious fenestration plan, look oat to sway ing tops of evergreen trees. Photograph by Morley Baer. You can build a redwood vacation house such as the one pic tured (or remodel an old cabin with redwood) for little more than the amount of money you’d spend on a new car. If the foregoing statement makes you suspect that Pinnochio is alive and writing for newspapers, one can hardly blame you. Take another good look at the house shown above. The architect specified redwood, not just for its economy, durability, stability and low maintenance, but because of the unique interplay of its colors and textures with those of the environment. The award winning design includes four decks, large living and dining areas, kitchen, bath and a mezzanine devoted to sleeping alcoves. The house accommodates five people with ease. Total cost including land was $9,000. Obviously the second or vacation house is no longer a luxury reserved for the Midas-touched few, or a frivolity for the spend thrift few. It is, in fact, a form of economy and a form of enjoy ment for the average family. Like all real estate, it is a probable hedge against inflation. As a vacation retreat, the second house can be rented when the owner is not in residence. Rental moneys can do a lot to reduce a mortgage or swell a bank account. Finally, today’s vacation house may well become tomorrow’s retirement house.
