Justice of Peace Mrs. Wflda Blalock was called and a warrant was issued. “Sgt. Sam Ives and Patrolman A. F. Howard went to the Dunn home to serve the warrant. They found the house locked and got no answer when they knocked So they decided to wait until Mrs. Dunn returned, which was ? matter of minutes. Then she let them in the house where they found Dunn. Sgt. Ives was in the process of reading the warrant to Dunn when he asked, ‘Who let you in’ my house?’ and he was told that his wife had let them in. “Dunn became further mad dened at this point and Mrs °un” ra" out of the back door of the home, and then Dunn asked Sgt Ives, Do you know how it feels to kill a man?’ and Ives said, ‘No’. “Then Dunn said, ‘Well in just a minute you’re gonna find out either how it feels to kill a man or be killed yourself.” With that Dunn shoved Ives and grabbed a 12 gauge single barrel shotgun from a nearby closet and almost with the same motion, grabbed a shell from a dresser drawer and loaded it in to the gun, and he was raising the gun on.Ives when Officer Howard fired three shots from his .38 pistol. “Only one of the three bullets struck Dunn, and that was just under the breast bone, almost dead center. Dunn was then rushed by ambulance to Lenoir Memorial Hospital where Doc tor (John) DuBose did an emer gency operation shortly after ex amining the damage done by the bullet. At 5:32 Dr. DuBose told me that Dunn had come through the operation and was in good con dition, but at 6:15 I got another call from the hospital, saying that he had taken a turn for the worse, and before I could drive from the police station to the hospital he had died. “Mrs. Dunn had been pretty badly beaten. She had a black eye and numerous welts and bruises across her back, which she said came from being beat en with a leather belt.” And Chief Bates added, visi bly shaken at 7:15 Monday Morning, “I hate for one of our men to nave to kill anybody, but I’d rather it be another man than any of our officers.” PROBABLY CAUSE FOUND In a preliminary hearing Tues day probable cause was found of the guilt of Benjamin Locke III of Wilmington, who was caught trying to burglarize Harold Dail’s store south of Kinston on May 14th.
